sales Breaking: Verizon Buys Oath.com

Spaceship Spaceship
Recently, Verizon announced the news of a brand new company, Oath, which will be created by merging Yahoo! and AOL. This comes on the back of Verizon's agreement to purchase Yahoo! for $4.5 billion.

The news, which was originally broken by Business Insider, has received global media attention. However, the reaction to the new "Oath" name has been mixed, with The Telegraph calling it one of the worst rebrandings in corporate history.

After the announcement, many domain industry blogs pointed out that Oath.com wasn't owned by Verizon. Jamie Zoch (@Yofie) of DotWeekly pointed out that AOL had secured hundreds of domains related to Oath, but hadn't bought Oath.com. This has now changed.

It looks as though Verizon has just acquired Oath.com from the World.com domain portfolio using the services of The Treadstone Group. The World.com portfolio is one of the best in existence, boasting names such as Revenue.com, Doctor.com and USA.com.

The Treadstone Group, which Verizon looks to have employed to acquire this name, is a global IP acquisitions company that has been a part of many corporate domain acquisitions in the past.

Thanks to George Kirikos (@GeorgeK) for the tip.

For a business that should be branding for the next generation I think they picked a horrible name. Generation Z or whoever is next doesn't even know what Oath means. I could of sworn I heard that sound come from my stomach after I drank to much last weekend. :)

I agree...all that money to spend and they picked a mediocre name. Maybe they have some great minds with some deep psychological marketing behind the new name that will make us all trust aol and yahoo again...not! When I heard it this morning I thought it was a joke but then I remembered April fools day was a few days ago...

It's nice that they got the domain. Still a horrible brand, though!

The term 'oath' has a 'heavy' meaning in history of mankind.

If a worldwide known company uses exactly this term as their new company name, it's interesting why.
They don't use 'world' or 'wide' or 'web' (examples) - they use 'oath'.

So the question is, to whom they are making this 'oath'...
...it's strange, at least for me.

Great article! but................ on a different note. after reading

http://dotweekly.com/verizon-announce-oath-brand-yahoo-aol-domain-fail/

can someone please comment on why even though it's an UNDERSTOOD taboo by domainers to NEVER register TM issue domains? that someone registered after this Version announcement this domain?

VerizonOath.com?

Thanks for sharing James.

"Google" was the sound that came from mine after a few too many drinks!

I kinda like the Yahoo! brand but haven't really been there for 10 or maybe 15+ years... It was all about the Yahoo! Games back then.

Beezelbub? Azazel? The Falling Star? lol

jk but Oath is a nice 4 Letter domain. Seems like the trend these days with anything internet.

It can see the sales pitch now.

"We provide the best service. That is our OATH our Promise to you."

although it's sounds too close to "clumsy Oafs" lol

I see Leap.com under your name. Now that would have been a quality re-branding. A strong action verb.

I can't wait for the Simpsons to rebrand Homer to saying "OATH!!!" instead of "Dohhh".

btw... thanks for posting @James Iles

Seems like a prophectic name that has some strong meaning and vision behind it. Don't judge too early.

I think that @GeorgeK's asking price for Leap.com would be about 50x higher than the price that they paid for Oath.com... Although 'Leap' is 100x better than 'Oath' ;)

So with AOL and Yahoo allegedly merging? Will they be able to create a better search engine?

It would be nice to see them try. While I love Google, competition is healthy to keep them on their toes.

In the long run, Leap will save them a lot of headaches. Leap sounds much better (cooler) and most people will embrace it. Oath sounds a bit religious and stiff. And although they may have spent a lot of money acquiring these names, it's not too hard for them to back out and change the name to say Leap :) we're talking about a multi-Billion dollar corporation, and besides the Oath domains will not go to waste many will buy them at or near what they paid for them I'm sure. Hoping @GeorgeK get a nice payday with his soon to be Verizon Leap.com.

Great word but wrong application. Just picture yourself telling someone you use Oath everyday. What? Oath! What is that a breakfast bar. :)

Oath , so what are they promising?
That they wont be sharing and selling information and then blame hackers for their misdeeds? :xf.laugh:

My favorite domain name that Verizon owns (and have put to really good use /developed ) is HUM.com.

Such a great name. Wonder how much that name would be worth if it was undeveloped

I regged VROath and OathVR a while back in king.

Was this fortunate or should I be expect a nasty letter through the door?

I think they also inquired about Vow, Pledge, Trust and settled for Oath.
