domains Are Your Brandables Profitable?

Spaceship Spaceship
There’s a saying in real estate: You make your money on the buy, not on the sale. The same is true for domain names, but selecting solid brandables can be tricky. We need information to inform our opinions and develop our skills. So here are some tips for making savvy purchases that can increase the likelihood of profitable sales when it comes to brandable domains.

RIDING WITH THE KING
  • There are exceptions, but generally speaking, your best shot at finding a buyer for a brandable domain is with the dot com extension. There is a reason why the inventory at top brandable resellers like BrandBucket, BrandRoot, and Namerific are 99% dot com.

TOOLING AROUND
  • Check DomainTools. Older is better and if it’s never been regged -- proceed with caution.
  • Have the dot net and dot org versions ever been registered? Are they registered now? If yes, that’s a sign of demand and value.

GOIN' WAY BACK
  • If there’s been a prior website or business built on a domain name, it’s an indication of prior demand. Check your domain for past websites at the WayBack Machine.

NAME BIOGRAPHIES
  • Check the root words and/or sounds in your domain for similar sales at NameBio.
  • Using SalesReef.com as an example, search for dot com stats starting with the word “sales”. Then search for dot com stats ending in “reef”.
    • Sort the results by highest price first. Disregard the highest listing and focus on the 10th search result. If it’s above $2,000 or $3,000 that indicates market strength.
    • You can also sort the search results by date. If most of the sales were in prior years then that root word may be out of style and not so desirable or marketable now.

BUCKET OF BRANDS
  • BrandBucket now has an inventory of over 20,000 names. If none of the root words or sounds in your domain come up in a search at BrandBucket, you need to ask yourself why.
  • You can also check NamePros, BrandRoot, and Namerific to see what they’ve got listed.

SEARCH ME?

  • Check Google for other versions of your name. Continuing the previous example (SalesReef.com), you'd type in: SalesBooth.com, SalesWorld.com, SalesMonster.com, etc. If these domains are parked, or worse yet, still available for hand registration, then that’s a sign of weak demand. It can also mean that potential buyers have a lot of other choices besides the version you own or are considering to buy.

ESTIMATED VALUE
  • Estibot gives you a valuation based on search volume, cost per click, similar sales, and other factors. While it’s not always accurate, especially for brandables, it’s one more piece of information to consider. You can also use Epik for free domain valuations or DomainMongrel.

CASE STUDY: GlamourTrain.com
  • Pros – Several brandables beginning with ‘glamour’ are listed at BrandBucket. Existing companies include Glamour magazine, GlamourQueen.com (Neiman Marcus), and GlamourUs.com. There are also many companies with brands ending in ‘train’ (e.g., SmileTrain.com, SleepTrain.com, MealTrain.com, SoulTrain.com, TechTrain.com, GlimmerTrain.com and BigTrain.com).
  • Neutral – 6 years old. Sale prices for domains starting with ‘glamour’ are mediocre.
  • Cons – No names ending in ‘train’ on BrandBucket. No prior registrations for GlamourTrain except dot com. No prior websites, and the Estibot valuation is $0. Lastly the pairing of ‘glamour’ with ‘train’ is not strong compared to words like ‘gal’, ‘girl’, ‘queen’, or ‘world’.

Evaluating a brandable domain name has objective and subjective aspects to it. The ideal is to buy names with popular keywords, good synergy, and moderate to low competition. This provides the basis for a smart purchase and increases the likelihood of a profitable sale.

In general, a helpful post, Keith. Thank you!

However, when you say:

you seems to be ignoring the fact that particularly in brandables, we make money on the sale - as they are mostly handregs.

But the majority of brandables never sell. There are 100 times as many brandable domains as their are startups and end users. That's why one must purchase wisely to even have a chance of making a profit. The domain BlueCloud.com is many times more saleable than BagelLady.com. Yes BagelLady is a brand but BlueCloud contains two keywords in very high demand and the name appplies to a much wider range of businesses than BagelLady. Therefore BlueCloud has a much greater chance of selling and at a higher price.

Great article to my eyes.. I appreciated a lot how is possible find an analytical calculation of what has more potential to be sold. I also think that is better buy brandables on the niches where we have high knowledge inside because we can know what an enduser might desire

A good piece of advice. I've been already employing many of these tips but I learned a couple of new ones. The only thing I'm not sure about is the age bit as I'm inclined to think age is not as important as it usually is if you're selling through marketplaces like BrandBucket and Namerific, but I may be wrong.

Nice post, thanks for sharing.

Brandables, whether made up words or two real words give off feelings, either positive, negative or just funky. I always consider how the word(s) look, feel and what feelings they put out there.

As they say, what you put out there you get back. From a business point of view you want to be putting out emotions or images that make sense for the market or product you are selling.

So in photography for example, creating space, technology mixed with nature or vibrance can create a brand that makes sense.

As you mentioned too, looking at Greek and Latin word roots can open the door to some cool words (made up), when you look at 'ocu' you see why oculus was named.

Hi Keith, Very interesting thread, and my question is about trademarks (TMs). I am buying some names on the expired domain marketplaces, and always check for TMs first. If a domain comes up that I really like but there is an existing TM, does that always mean I should stay away from it?

Many different companies can have a TM for the same word /phrase as long as it is in different TM classes (like "Delta" for 1) an airline 2) a hotel chain and 3) a plumbing /faucet company). If I got the domain, a new owner would only be restricted by not using it for the same class of goods as the existing TM holder.

Any thoughts appreciated. Thanks.

I'm not a lawyer but that is my understanding also. Unless you create a website for it that somehow relates it to a conflicting industry, it is generally the enduser's problem. The exception would be if you own something like: DeltaFlyers.com. Then you might hear from a lawyer. But if you own DeltaPhase.com I don't think there is any issue. But again that is my layperson's opinion.

Thank you for the article. I appreciate you and all the others that take the time to write these. I'm trying to increase my reading and learn more ways to gather information. The tools you listed out are much appreciated. This is exactly the type of article I am looking for. something that breaks things down with more detailed steps so that as I follow them, I can use that to develop my own style. It gives me a starting point.

I have learned that I tend to over evaluate my domains. I think that is due to starting out in domaining with Domain Sherpa before learning about Namepros. So I was thinking much higher dollar amounts than what the reality is. I think that is an important lesson for to learn fast.

I did have one question. As I am learning what makes a brandable, I think I am getting it confused with a different type of domain. Here are three I have:

itvillas.com
tackset.com
geopwr.com

Are these brandables? Or a different type of domain?

Thanks again.

Thanks for the comments on the article. I really appreciate it.

Yes the domains you've listed would be considered to be brandables.

If you can think of at least one really good idea that the name can be used for then register it. If you can't then don't register it. The more uses you can come up with for any domain the better the domain is.

Good point, Hook. The more industries it applies to the more potential customers you have.

By the way everyone, one of the name ideas that I 'gave away' on this thread was Wheelza. No one hand regged so I went ahead and it's now listed on BrandBucket at $1995. Let's see if it sells..... ;)

Keith, in your various (excellent) posts you have mentioned the "radio test" for names. Some of the names I buy in the expired lists would not pass this test but have excellent potential for apps etc (my first BB sale was just such a name). Since most kids and younger adults never actually listen to the radio, and most information is passed on through texting, emailing and social media, (i.e.: in written rather than verbal form) do you feel that the "radio test" is maybe becoming less important?

The radio test is a widely established principal in brandables. However, rules can and are successfully broken. Name hacks like Prysm.com are one example.

PS what was the name you sold at BB?
