With summer well on its way (where I live, at least), I wanted to take a look at one of the best domain names in existence: summer.com and how it’s being used.

The short answer is, it isn’t being used at all. Typing summer.com into my browser returns a “Webpage Not Available” message, and it looks like it’s been this way for quite a while. A real shame, as even Alexa shows that it has a ranking of just over 10 million.

A Whois search shows that the domain name is still owned by its original owner: “School Dist 67 Okanagan Skaha” – a Canadian school district administrator that registered the domain name in 1995.

I was very surprised to see the domain name not resolving, as I think that there are so many brands that would pay seven figures to get a domain name like this. Off the top of my head, I can think of fashion brands, health brands, holiday companies, and drink brands that would all benefit from owning the domain name. It’s such a good domain name to base a marketing campaign around.

Imagine a company like American Airlines creating a campaign around the phrase “Summer Vacations/Holidays," with summer.com being advertised alongside.

It’s admirable that the School District have no doubt turned down hundreds of offers for the domain name over the past 20 years, but in 2015 they’ll be able to command a high six figure or even a seven figure sum for summer.com. As it is owned by a school district, this money could be spent and dispersed to help improve the schools and the children’s education.

Andrew Rosener, I think it’s time for you to contact the Summer.com owners to help them to sell the domain name!

I'm I mistaken, or is the email on the whois the same as the domain? If the website isn't resolving what would make you think the email is? lol :)

@FPForum - email can be used on a domain without the actual domain name resolving to a website.

If the website isn't resolving what would make you think the email is?

One way to find out is by emailing. And then calling if that fails.

@jamesiles - Even when the mail server points to the same address as the http server?

Correct, MX records (mail exchanger records) are completely separate.

The mail servers on Summer.com are set correctly:
Code:
Pref Hostname IP Address TTL
0 summer-com.mail.protection.outlook.com 207.46.163.170 60 min

This domain name can and should be sold for minimum 7 figures to an end user.
Any deal below 7 figures will be a bargain.
If the owner wishes to sell it to a reseller, he should consider selling it below 7 figures.

Ultra-premium^2 domain name.
Huge potential for development in regard to an extremely popular season.
Can serve as a website for tourism/fashion/travel/sports/beach/gaming/popular culture.
Unforgettable and unique.

End user price: $1m-$5m
*If I owned this type of domain, I would have tried to sell it closer to the mid 7 figures.

Good luck :) (In case the owner, perhaps NP member will read this thread).

I don't see this selling anywhere near $1m. It's a great domain, but its seasonal aspect presents a serious problem for any content developer. Whatever content you'd produce for it, it makes more sense to put it on a domain that is relevant throughout the entire year. I could see it being used moreso as a brandable like spring.com is.

I find it interesting looking at the votes cast and am surprised. I voted $1m+. I just can't imagine any travel firm or major tour operator in the UK not wanting this let alone throughout the world and various other industries.

The owner is a school district (not a person) in the Okanagan region of British Columbia (A Canadian province)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/School_District_67_Okanagan_Skaha

Not sure how a province can sell a "asset" like that..do know the in Ontario, it might be sold to the public for best offer (public tender)

@briguy But someone has made a conscious decision to register it on behalf of the district which is strange. Would they have a right to do that with public funds or maybe it was a committee decision?...and what was the reason, did they want to develop it and then didn't bother/forgot about it/short on money?

Would be interesting to find out the story behind it

Yes...school boards are run by "trustees" (board of trustees, who if I understand correctly are elected officials) so assuming it was put to a vote, and trustee boards are governed by "by laws" ...
Really would be interesting..@mjamescork !
Wondering if any other Canadians could give better information about the BC school boards, ( @mis_chiff ?)

well here is the trustees emails - so it looks like it is being used for that purpose
since the start.

Living in the Okanagan and seeing that domain wasted is sad!

I emailed them months ago, and they wanted an 'actual offer' before they would discuss it with the board. Anyone want to go for making an offer?

Did you shoot them an offer?
It would be interesting to know what they had in mind.

Peace,

I offered to broker it, and they said they would need an "actual offer" before they could take it to the board. Of course I wont spend my time brokering it if I dont know what price to ask for a name.
