Following Initial Early Non-Public Release Period, .MUSIC TLD Now Available

LOS ANGELES, CA – Following a brief period of time last year when the new “.MUSIC” Top-Level Domain (TLD) – a domain for artists and those adjacent of the music community – was made available for a limited number of select applicants, the domain is now freely available for public registration, first come, first served.

.MUSIC first launched in September 2023, initially offering a 30-day period between September 11 through November 15 when trademark holders could register domain names that...

I've been a supporter of .music for a long time and think it has great potential. It's possibly the best new gTLD ever.

I've even been turning "regular people" outside of online commerce and domaining on to it now with general availability.

However...

After checking availability myself, the degree to which desirable words and phrases have been RESERVED is just beyond insane. I was originally going to say obscene, but I'll leave it at insane for now. ;)

Why on earth - I mean come on now.

This doesn't happen with other TLDs, and I've been there for them all, not anywhere near to this degree or extent.

I even tried to get a great musician friend of mine named Ralph who made a really great CD to get into .music. And even Ralph.music is reserved (seriously?).

I don't see how all the great potential I felt .music has along with liking it myself can come to pass if so many of the most no-brainer desirable words and phrases are going to be unavailable and reserved for whatever reason.

So hopefully that will stop. And I don't mean put big premium prices on them either. I've already seen one with a "modest" premium price in the low $xxx and normal reg fee for renewals, but "big" would not be good either. Ralph - still can't get over that one.

Most good names are reserved... This is not meant for domainers.

And to think I almost included a statement about that. So please note:

#1, I wasn't even writing on behalf of myself, but on behalf of all the "real people" with real connections to and involvement with music. As I indicated, I have even personally been "promoting" .music to such people myself.

#2, Even if I was writing with myself in mind too, I am not a domainer. I haven't been a domainer for years and years. I started out as a domainer over 20 years ago, but am one no more. But that's why I have an old NP account, a [Removed by Moderator - Rule: 1.29] account, and follow a few of the blogs and industry news. My favorite reply any time someone ever even inquires about a domain, which is rare now, is "not for sale" 99.999999999999% of the time. And in the interest of further disclosure just to illustrate the point, I'm about to delete a small bunch of ancient listings I still have on one of the big famous platforms that I practically even forgot about, and there's only one domain I only just days ago decided to actually make for sale because someone contacted me about it and I've decided "yeah sure, why not," but that one alone certainly doesn't make me any domainer anymore by any million mile stretch. That's just the exact equivalent of someone deciding to merely put one of their extra houses up for sale when they already have and use others.

On that note, #2, I would actually like to get one or two - not as a domainer - at all - but with good faith intention to use. I do have a certain outside-the-box connection to music. But:

This is way, way, way, way too strict and restrictive, most especially even just for "non-domainer" people involved with music and full of bona fide intent and music related vision and purpose:

Particularly this part (this link goes to a certain time spot in the video):

Based on something as narrow and restrictive as that, I've already referred paying business to .music, but .music can and probably will revoke the domain and keep the money no less.

So while I loved .music and the idea of .music, this is now a huge disappointment, and in my opinion a huge disservice both to .music and to music itself. That kind of super strict and restrictive requirement leaves no room for a vast multitude of genuine good faith registrants and users who have vision and good intention, but don't fit into such a tiny restrictive box.

PS: one of these "real people" I've posted for has even just been studying at Julliard no less, and may have just or just be about to finish up. But I doubt the person could satisfy the current level of strictness and narrowness in the requirement. Not good enough, ay?

I replied to you but it's awaiting moderation, perhaps because I included two links to the official myMusic "How to Verify" video. So check back if/when it appears.

Nice breakdown. I make music here and there as well, and I will not be getting a .music for personal use either, what a strange registry.

Come on, dude, is that really good or necessary? Wouldn't you then even be a good faith user, and wouldn't that be good for both .music and music itself according to what I said? How about this breakdown:

1. Your attitude is all wrong and all bad.

2. Since you only joined NP in Oct 2019 compared to me, you should develop a little more respect for your elders.

3. I want to find a word worse than "snide" for your comment, but I haven't settled on one yet. One can start here though: https://www.google.com/search?q=what+is+worse+than+snide

4. Your attitude and comment say a great deal about you, but nothing about me or my good faith statements.

5. My statements are not only the very definition of "good faith," but best for both .music, music itself, and I've even already made money for .music and everything involved with registering .music already to boot.

6. So I don't know what you think you've accomplished with a snarky comment like that (even "snarky" is not completely great or accurate for this), but it's definitely not in the best interests or win-win for anyone and everyone, and music, the Internet, and the world.

7. PS: Taking the screen name "King" is more than a little proud and narcissistic perhaps?
