Hi all,

Im kinda stuck in a very crazy situation and i was wondering if anyone can actually help me.

Here is the situation

I bid on a domain name tiltomo(dot)com on Godaddy for $15 as soon as i bid on this, the system gave me a message saying that you have been outbid. So i wanted to increase the bid to $20 and accidentally i had not deleted the $15, so the system took it as $1520 and i had hit enter by then.

I had called Godaddy immediately and tried explaining the situation that this was done by mistake.

All the rep on the other end could say was there is nothing to do.

Has anyone ever been in such a situation, what do do now?

Ps:- I did a bit of research on the domain name before i wanted to bid, it looks like there used to be a visual search engine by the name tiltomo ( checked on Google ) .

In the event of a worse case scenario where if i have to pay for this domain name ( if i dont pay, they suspend my account and i dont want that because i have a lot of domain names with them), what is the actual worth of this domain name in the market.

Feeling awaful about this and hope some of the pros here could help me with this.

GoDaddy uses a proxy bid system. No matter what your maximum bid is you only have to pay $10 more than the next highest bid. That means you'll only owe $1520 if someone else bids $1510.

I hope it ends up that way and ends up well.

Worse case scenario if i get screwed on this, what is the exact value of this domain?

This is an honest and understandable mistake. I would be jumping down GoDaddy's throat to have this bid canceled.

The final bid will be the actual worth of this domain in the (after)market.

To make things worse, the reps at godaddy refuse to cancel the bid. On their system, they can clearly see that my previous bid was $15 and then i tried bidding $20.

I dont understand why they would not even want to help. Based on the outcome of this, I am going to see whether I will continue with them or not. I have about 95 domain names registered with them and another 120 in pre-registration for the new domains. If this goes bad, I will transfer all the domains and move out.
Their Loss...

Previous website for this domain was strictly amateur hour. Best of luck, I hope you don't lose your shirt.

just me and one more bidder.

Any suggestions on what i can do here?

I also feel bad for the domain owner, he might be thinking that this could be a big sale for him, I just cant understand why Godaddy cant email the guy explaining what happened and that i want to withdraw this offer which i made by accident.

No need to feel bad for the "owner". According to the landing page, this is an expired domain. So the money is going to GD whatever the final price.

At present the, your current proxy bid is up to $50. Just hope the other guy doesn't want it really badly and bids it up too high.

If it ends at this price, just pay it - not worth losing your account over $50 and then learn to be more careful next time.

If it is an expired domain with Godaddy, why wont they cancel it?

Is there anything which i could do here?

Transfer all the domains you have with godaddy to another registrar and forget about this? It'll be a pain but at least you get 1 year extra for your money.

This indeed ended badly for me. The bid went up all the way up to $521 and finished at that and i had to buy it at that price from Godaddy. Soon, i am going to transfer all my domains which i have with them ( around 200). This is probably the worst company i have ever dealt with.

Just a question though - Is this domain really worth $521? Because there were a lot of people bidding on this ( at the last moment) . So i am wondering if there is any worth in this domain or is it just godaddy trying to rip me off?

gd didnt rip you off they are a multi billion dollar company dealing with a ton of auctions all the time

what you can do is list it for sale once u get it and hopefully someone will buy it for a few hundred etc

Sorry. Didnt mean to accuse Godaddy, just reacted . Its just that i found it very strange that the last few minutes brought in a lot of bids and went all the way upto $521. Anyway, I have paid for it now. As soon as i get it, i will relist it for sale and hopefully somebody buys it off. ( if there were genuine bidders),

But can someone please tell me if this domain is worth $521 , why would someone bid all the way for this domain. What makes this one so much valuable?

most action of gd auctions happen in the last 5 minutes, the domain is worth 500 to at least one person or else it wouldnt end at 521

Since im new and trying to learn, i might ask a question which would make it look amateurish, so i apologize for that in advance.

Can someone please shed light into how this domain is worth $500 in the aftermarket?

I wouldn't ever bid on such a name, and if I was forced to at gunpoint-then never to $521. I don't think I would ever bid on a name like this.

So to be honest, no-it's not worth $521. It's a reg-fee name.

Hopefully, the previous owner will renew and transfer out. Perhaps he was the one who pushed the price up that high, just so that whoever was bidding would buy it from him after he transfers out?? Who knows. Let's hope so.

If not-then take it as a lesson.

Yes. Indeed an expensive lesson.

Don't pay GoDaddy for this domain auction win.

Tell them that the bid happened accidentally. Show your communication record.

The most they will do is cancel your GoDaddy Auction Membership. Or give you a warning...

I would do it this way, if it happened to me

Tried all that to no avail. Next time will be extra careful.

Thanks for all the concerns guys.

Summary:
No room for errors even by mistake. 0% tolerance levels from the companies. Be careful guys.

Be happy that your mistake did not cost you $ 1520 but only $ 521. That saved you a thousand Dollars.

Apparently it was previously some sort of search engine so perhaps it has traffic? Anyhow, if this sort of thing happens again, I'd suggest not posting the name of the domain in question in a public forum.

At least test the traffic, could generate some revenue? But probably not enough to recoup initial cost.

I too thought that perhaps it went this badly because he posted the name here. From the first post, I thought: "damn, he mentioned the name". And also the finer details, e.g. $1,520 proxy bid, etc.

@OP: Out of curiosity, how many bidders were there exactly?
