LLLLL.com (5 Letter) Sales and discussion thread

Hi guys,

Like anyone of you, I am always searching for new trends. For the last 18 months I went really deep into the LLLL. I placed my bets, and now only have to wait for all them 4 letters to be :sold:

So I was thinking. What would be a nice new niche for me to get into? My answer after some thinking and testing is actually quite simple. I decided to invest in quality LLLLL coms. I know I know, it is not actually a new trend and not really a niche. But I tell you, these 5 letter domains can become big business in some time :imho:

Why? Because quality 5 letter domains are extremely brandable. Lots of startups there looking for a brandable short name, especially the web 2.0 based ones. Quality 5 letter domains generate also natural type in traffic as I experienced myself. And ofcourse, it is dotcom based, the only safe bet you can make I believe.

I also believe that not all 5 letter dotcoms will be sold shortly, maybe they will never be. You really need to have quality names. But that is also a question I have for you. What is a quality name in this niche?

So maybe we can make this thread a bit sticky and share thoughts and experiences in developing this part of the domain market.

Oh yeah, just to share this with you. I recently acquired sygar, lyned, jebia, sebod, pifab, pobit, samau and penep.

Digg.com is only an exception that only emphasize the rule that web 2.0 projects don't need meaningless LLL.com, LLLL.com, LLLLL.com and etc.

I'd prefer something nice-sounding and meaningful like fireget.com or maxbrowse.com than imaginary lohop.com... Don't even think there will be enough Web 2.0 projects even to take 10% CVCV.com names

I really don't see these being near the investment that CVCV's would be (and I own zero CVCV's, so there is no bias here). CVCV is nice and short -- and sweet. But the more and more characters you add, the less and less an additional one means.

What does this mean for LLLLL.com investment prospects? Well, unlike a 3 letter .com (or even a 4 letter .com), endusers will be more encouraged than ever to merely hunt for a different name, rather than purchase yours.

Just look at the math... Look how many additional combinations are made with the addition of every single letter.

That is true of all marketable names.

The advantages of a 5-letter name are:
* Cheaper than 3- or 4-letters
* More variety
* As was said earlier, easy to memorise

The work of the domainer is to make a good selection and market it effectively. No reason to think you cannot be successful. Follow the two directives above.

I do foresee a bright future for the best LLLLL.com's, and many fallen fortunes in trying to get hold of "the" next big ticket.

Agreed, I can't see the LLLLL ever touching the LLLL, but - in predicting based on how other trends seem to be going - in any reasonable area of domaining, as more and more people become domainers, the 'real estate' of a certain category of domains lessens, just like the land rush that has now disappeared all the available LLLL.

Since there are so many (seemingly) useless LLLLL, I predict they'll kind of split into three main large groups: 1)random and unpronounceable, 2)pronounceable but poor/uninteresting, 3)and the nice, memorable easily-said names that stand out from the rest. Right now, even this last category is a dime a dozen, you have to weed 1 stellar name out of 100 good ones or you'll lose your house and your left nut trying to reg 'em all.

I keep repeating, really nice LLLLL, even if they're just brandable and not real words or abbrevs or acronyms, are starting to see modest sales. You don't reg them now for a huge quick flip, you reg them carefully with an eye towards 1 - 2 years from now when all the very nice LLLLL will be gone, when only the poorer quality ones are left. Then people wanting brandable LLLLL won't be able to get them at reg fee, they will have to buy. From us.
Even then, since there will be a large selection, I don't predict getting huge amounts for them. I'm modestly thinking that a very good quality pronounceable LLLLL will, in 1 to 2 years, sell for high xx to low xxx. And that makes it worth picking up a few, to me. Those LLLLL in my sig are already worth low - med xx according to offers I've had, and that's what I'm basing this on largely... that in another year or two, those will be high xx or low xxx.

Another thing to remember is: if you don't have a lot of cash to spend, the smartest way to increase your earnings is by accurately predicting where trends are headed, not by spending huge amounts on trends that are already here. A couple years back we were laughing at all the 'ridiculous' LLLL available names, and honestly thinking they would NEVER have any value.

Since there are so many more LLLLL than LLLL, I doubt they would ever be sold out. But I can predict the GOOD ones will be sold out, and I think even the okay ones will be sold out. And if the number of domainers keeps increasing at this rate... who can honestly say that ALL the LLLLL will never sell out?

To sound like a broken record: I think it's worthwhile to get a few nice ones. But I also think it's worthwhile to really investigate what a nice one IS, instead of just regging because it 'looks neat' when you come across it.

CVCCV.com (Repeated Consonant) stats

Here is some stats on the availability of CVCCV.com domains with repeated Consonants. (e.g. cegge.COM, ceggi.COM, fozze.COM, hecce.COM, hirre.COM) I have seen many of these domains perform well on eBay.

The stats were made ignoring the first vowel being the letter y.

68% of 13100 are registered.
>99.8% of the Premium only letter are registered (ignoring those with "HH")

I have made mistakes in the past on which 5 letters to acquire. I know now exactly the 5 letter names I want to have and being as fussy as I am, I would not be able to locate 1000 5 letter domain names that i would want without paying a high premium for them. Penef.com, Pehem.com, fogof and lohop.com don't have anything special about them and would not be worth collecting, they are far from what I would call premium, they just sound lame when you say them, those type of 5 letter domain names paint a very 'sorry picture' of 5 letter.com domain names and would be money well wasted. CVCVC is meaningless if it sounds like Pehem, 'Pehem' premium letters dud lame sound when you read it, fogof, fogof sounds like fogoff missing an 'f' lohop sounds like LowHop missing a 'w' Penef all premium letters, but also premium lame sound to go with it. Its what the made up word looks like and sounds that matters, not the letters it contains or if it is CVCVC

As for 6 letter LLLLLL.com, for made up words they never looked right on the eye to me, 5 letter LLLLL.com always looked way more hip and funky. As for names like maxbrowse.com nice name, I have Thebrowse.com. Fireget.com Hmmmmmm, you can keep that one though

As "Reece" said in the next quote, do the math, how many 5 letter are out there, well the majority don't interest me, as subjective as it is I only want the best I can get

Also I don't really consider myself a true domainer as such (I am not a find an end user type of guy), I mainly buy names for myself for love of domain names themself. Then I ended up with far too many names and end up selling some on ebay. ( I do have a few exceptions to this rule on domains I have on ebay, but I won't go into that)

I am a collector just like someone who collects rare coins or guitars, comics or what have you. Now taking this mindset and psychology into focus, you will have to agree that there are other domain collectors who think about domains a collectible like I do, these people will take a nice 5 letter over a 6 letter .com not just because a 5 Letter made up .com looks better which I think it does, but because it is shorter and pride just won't let them step into six letter territory

Web 2.0 projects aside, Take the collector aspect into mind, now you have yourself a market, albeit a fussy one, but a market none the less. Later on you might have end users really wanting your 5 letter .com names too we will see waht the future brings

One of the things I like about LLLLL.com's looking at it as a developer perspective is that it is short and memorable. The key that I see with LLLLL.com's is that it's gotta be prounceable. Not only prouuncealbe, but it's gotta sound good!!

Short and catchy...that's the way to go.

I just picked up an LLLLL.com, I'm not much at buying a boat load of it for investment just yet... but as a developer, if I get an idea and want to build a site, I can go into my trusty collection of LLLLL.com's and pick out a good one to develop.

The one that i just picked up is oolon.com (I think it's a beautiful name) and one that I'm going to develop something later on with.

also it is absolutely wrong to list actual 5 letter words as examples of LLLLL sales.
Do not mislead newbies, random premium letter CVCVCs sell for about 5$ on ebay, and there are still many free to register, it is a long way before 5L.coms become worth anything...

I agree random 5 letter domain names have no value and I don't like them at all ('BUT' I am 'passionate' about 'quality' 5 letter .coms). That is why anybody who has seen a few of my 5 letter posts, that I advice to be very very selective and if you want to look for 'reg free' domains avaialble, go through lists of hundreds and hundreds and buy some only if they scream at you 'I rock, I have something very special about me.'

But I absolutely love 'high quality' 5 letter domain names like elilo.com and poonk.com and the other 5 letter.com domain names I have

As for CVCVC it does not matter with 5 letter .com's, its slap you in the face 'wow' factor you want!!!! We need to separate our thinking from LLLL.com, even if it is just one more letter for LLLLL.com, 5 letter!

If you are new to 5 letter domaining, go to my ebay auction under raredn.com to get an idea of nice 5 letter domain names. Believe me I have bought the dud's like huzif.com wupip.com gekuf.com and other shockers, just because they are pronouceable means nothing, head for 'high quality' 5 letter.com's and you can do no wrong

This only includes domains that resolve so actual numbers are slightly higher.

I mean how is selling 5L.coms thinking "outside the box"? It is clear that they are good for branding, but there are just too many of them to be good for anything else than flipping. Sure several 24$ sales are nice, but I've seen many of your 5Ls ending with no bids at all on ebay...

ssamriga, I enjoy your well thought out 4 letter.com posts as much as anybody : )

I am solid promoter of 5 Letter.com, so I have to stand up for it in times of adversity. But as mentioned, I only like 'quality 5 letter.coms' when it comes to 5 letter!

As for my 5 letter auctions that didn't sell, I am always testing the 5 letter waters, trying to find out what people really want in their 5 letter domain names!

Sorry ssamriga if I came of harsh, I just want to give newbies the right Idea when it comes to 5 letter.coms!

Actually I shoud really try to pull my head in and get on your good side ssamriga

ok, no hard feelings, I just want people to think carefully before jumping into any new trend, and 5L.coms may not grow in value faster than renewal fees, then again if you are good enough in finding the right names and the right buyers, that can be a very profitable niche of course...
