· #1 | | New Member | Howdy from Colorado I've been reading up mostly in the newb section and it looks like you have a good active community here. Lots of helpful and experienced veterans as well as the usual mix of wiseguys and jokers. Definitely my kind of forum.
I purchased my first domain back in 1999 with the intent of developing it into a third party website reseller. Long story, short version, the business finally bombed after about three years. It was an awesome tax write off while it lasted and a great learning experience. I still own the domain but it's been sitting inactive since I shut down the business. Last I checked, it doesn't even resolve.
Fast forward to early 2007. I purchased another domain so I could start a WordPress blog. The subject matter was going to be about making money online. Welll, after getting burned for a few thou$and (unrelated to the blog itself), it finally sunk in to my brain that I was chasing rainbows. A complete waste of time and money. Needless to say, the blog effort came to a screeching halt. The upside was I became reasonably comfortable with blogging using Wordpress and started getting familiar with PHP, CSS, and of course, cpanel and Fantastico. The domain name was really horrible and I allowed it to expire a few weeks ago.
For about the last ten months I've been intensely studying the ins and outs of an industry that traces its history back many hundreds of years. In just the last four or five years the internet has literally revolutionized this market. In the last two years it's become red hot and is now growing by leaps and bounds. It's "inflation-proof", international in scope, and nowhere near reaching a saturation point which I doubt is even possible.
Ok, now that you sort of know where my head's at, back to the subject of domain names. I was recently searching for a domain to use in another blog. The subject being, of course, the hot market I mentioned in the last paragraph. Naturally all the good one-word names were taken so I searched for good snappy two-word names. I had compiled a list of about 40 .com names that were still available. Maybe a dozen or so pretty good ones. Then I tried one that I thought for sure would be taken. The result came back "available". I was blown away. I couldn't believe my luck so I immediately registered it with Dynadot. I'm now wondering what the heck to do with this little gem of a domain name. I'm also contemplating grabbing the other dozen or so "pretty good" names I found and parking most of them and maybe developing a few as blogs or commercial sites.
So here I am. In the weeks to come I hope to learn enough in this forum to make some informed decisions about what my next steps should be.
Thanks for reading. Any and all advice/suggestions are welcome and appreciated! |
