New man checking in

Hey! My name is Brewmonkey. I have lived all over the US and currently reside in a small town in the midwest, I am 35, married and have 2 sons (2 & 12). The name comes from the years I spent working as the head brewer for a small brewing company. Loved the job and would go back in a heartbeat but an injury sidelined me and prevents me from being able to perform that job any longer.

I have been messing around with computers since the old TRS-80, Ti-99/4A, Apple IIE/IIC and so on. Started with BASIC and Cobol back then and through the years I have always just been a "tinkerer" when it comes to computers.

When I left the Army (I was an Infantry Sergeant) in the mid 90's I started learning HTML and then CSS and again have just tooled around with it for personal use. I did take some courses and learned VB6.0 and a few other things but when I was injured and could no longer work I really started getting in to web development thinking along the lines of perhaps hanging sites for some of the local companies(I live in a small town).
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/welcome-center/136574-new-man-checking-in.html

Anyway, my main project right now is developing my oldest sons school website from scratch. It has been a project from hell as no one there has any real idea of what is capable of being done and at the same time they provide no real guidance or direction on content. So this project has literally been 100% myself which is just fine by me!

Hello Sergeant ,
Really nice history you got , hope the injury is not lifelong injury if so sorry about that . And what are you kids names if you dont mind me asking. Well you mentioned u been tinkering with pcs , so did u actually repair any ( i never was able to repair any but blew few things all the time ) .... If you need help with your sons project , say regarding what to put on the site itself ( which is the most challenging part ) give me a shout, i try to find some stuff which could be worth posting about the school.
You been in army , so do you like to game and played COD or Cod2 yet ?

Enjoy ur stay here and check your pm your welcome gift awaits you.

Thanks to all for the warm and gracious hellos!

a1whs.com- I have dome some repair as well as building from scratch and while I would love to learn more my kids are keeping me fairly busy right now. As for their names my oldest is Edward IV and my youngest is Colm. My wife and I both come from Gaelic (she is 100% Scottish) lineage and wanted that to reflect. As for my injuries, they have healed well but complications from have left me with arachnoiditis which right now is incurable. Very basic definition, it is scar tissue growing on the inner layer of the menengies which is called the arachnoid membrane. That scar tissue as it grows can affect nerve roots and in my case it has really affected my lumbar spine. I have limited or no feeling from my waist down although I can still walk. There is a site at www.cofwa.org that can explain it much better if you are interested.

As for PC based games, Battlefield 1942 is what I was playing until my desktop died. I am now on my laptop and as it is not "set up" for gaming I am hesitant to play on it. Nothing like listening to that fan run constantly. LOL! Perhaps Santa will be nice to me this year and bring me the parts I need for the PC. I have not played the games you mention.
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/showthread.php?t=136574

I appreciate the offer on the website. In the coming days/weeks I am sure I will be posting a ton of questions as I will be working with some things I have not in the past such as MS SQL. Part of the site is going to be a DB where parents can log in and check their students progress as well as current weekly class/homework assignments. I was able to make a deal with the school for the site. Since my injuries have left me unable to work and we are still waiting on my social security to be approved we could not afford his tuition this year (Catholic School) so I have traded the school my services designing and maintaining their site in return he is going to school "tuition free" as it were.

WebForging- Sorry, a bit south of you. I am in Kansas City area and while I am not from here my wife and I find it a nice affordable and healthy place to raise the family.

However one of my favorite places to visit is Madison. Some good friends in the area give me reason to visit as well as some great beer and cheese curds. I do happen to have some of the best beer in my fridge, Uff-Da from New Glarus and a few others from their cellars.

Again, thanks to everyone for the warm welcome and I really look forward to being a part of the forums here.

I have never seen my injury as a "bad thing" and in fact have taken it as a blessing of sorts. I mean how else would I have gotten to spend this much time with my sons? Especially the youngest as he was only 3 months old when I had my surgery. He has grown up with Dad home everyday so he is a rough and tumble boy.

The oldest is just Edward and while he could be doing better in school but he is not doing so bad. He has shown an interest in web development so for last Christmas we bought him some books on HTML and JavaScript and gave him an old desktop to play with them on. He tinkers here and there and it has given us something to "do together" since I cannot play lacrosse with him anymore.

I appreciate the offer for the site but right now I am good to go.

well injuries scare me a lot so i asked as my freind was crushed by a truck and is still on morphine so that he can just sleep as he has constant pain, so thought i should ask if it was a severe injury with -ve sideffects in life ( well all injuries have -ve sideeffects but my freinds injuries have ruined him he lost his job and cannot possible be able to even work for about 2 to 3 years. so some can be that bad also )

And hope we will be seeing edward's site soon...

hi welcome to namepros.com
your oldest is only just younger than me nice of you to buy him books on the subject, like father like son as they say.
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/showthread.php?t=136574
my dad showed no interest in what i did.
i have only been web desgning since the end of year 7 (i am now in year 9)
my first major project with web designing came half way through year 8, before that i had taught myself dreamweaver and flash.
my job was to build the english intranet site for my school, they were like your sons school, they never told me anything, or what to do, i was just told to go off and make the website.
so i did, and made stuff what i felt should go in there! it was irrating though, i finished it for open evening this year, and i didn't get one thanks, not even the teacher who asked me to do it thanked me!
it didn't help the day before i scrapped what i had done (a re-make of the halo template in about 7 different frames. it looked buisness like, which isn't ideal for a school, so i changed it to the layout on josephheskett.com, and it looked ok, but nothing was said... i just left it now... and decided to sort my own website out lol
sorry i've babbled on lol
