Hi. How to search by owner

Hello,

I have had a web site development business for the last three years in the Boston area. My company resells w/ WWD, provides hosting, designs sites, sells merchant accts and we do a bit of SEO.

I recently acquired a small co., similiar to mine, that had purchased 75 domain names. The owner is no longer around, so I can't ask why they were purchased, but it looks like site names that could be developed or sold. Previously, I had the three domain names that I use. A few of the 75 are expiring this year, the remainder expire in future years.

I gather from an hour of reading on this site that this is a good place to begin to learn how to assess the value and then sell domain names.

A couple of names are like the following, others have geographicly specific or industry specific words in the domain name.

merchant-account-accept-credit-cards.com
internet-marketing-service-online.com

Here is my bigger question of the moment. I sense that list of domain names from this company could be incomplete. There may be names purchased that I don't know about. Therefore, I am trying to learn how I can search for all domain names purchased by x company name or x personal name. I can't search by domain name or IP address because I don't know them.

This is a little more than, Hi, but I saw what that gets you.

All the best,

Jim.

Welcome to NP.

Unfortunately you can't really do what you want. There is no central database that holds all this information. It's scattered across hundreds of databases and few if any of them let you do the search you want. In your case the best bet is to make sure you have access to the mailbox used to register the names and watch for renewal notices.

Welcome to NamePros!

First, welcome to NamePros and many happy returns!

Thanks for the introduction. We're in similar businesses.

Second, some of the information you're seeking may be available, though you'd have to do some sleuthing. Whois.sc can do an IP address lookup. If the names were put to the same IP, you might be able to track them one by one there (this is a $150 / year service).

Your question would be better posed in the domain name discussion category or a similar area. You'd also do well to use the search / advanced search function at the top right of NamePros and try things like "name owner lookup," and "whois registrant record" and slog through the results. With over a half million posts here there is a good chance your question has been asked and answered before.

Finally, why not go back to the owner you bought the company from? If the names came from accounts you now have access to, check those accounts. If there are more names but they were not listed as part of the assets you bought, I don't assume that they would be part of your purchase.

Good luck.

What you are looking for is available but I have no idea of the costs or specifics of the service. It is designed to help trademark owners track down trademark violations and build cases against repeat violators by showing the relationship between whois records, ip addresses and more.

If you don't know the specifics of the service how do you know it does what he wants? Markmonitor will not do what he wants. Their information on domain owners is not complete. They could easily miss a number of the names he is looking for. It's better than nothing though I suppose.

One more thought...

This really belongs in another category, but suggest you track down any and all email addresses of previous owner and forward them to yourself. Most registrars will send renewal notices~! Good luck.

Regards,
Keith

Give me a break. The guy was looking for help and I provided a link to a service that could possibly help him so that he could contact someone there about the specifics of what they could -or could not- do for him. With 40 million records, it seems far better than nothing but apparently you know more about their service than Markmonitor does.

A lot of members here like to blame the "kids" for driving away professionals but actually it is posts like yours that make people think twice about trying to help.

Hi,

Thank you all for your warm welcomes and for those of you with suggestions and questions I offer the following.

1) The former owner has passed on.
3) I do have access to his known email accounts and watch for renewal notices.
2) Yes I have about 180 domain names in all. Strangely, about 5 of them are current web design and hosting client's domain names. I just transfered one back to the client yesterday for the price of the renewal. A handleful are variations on these client domain names.
3) I have posted this question in the appropriate forum. There have been 18 views and no responses at all. Not much help to me there for some reason. Any advice on provoking responses, in the good sense of provoking, is welcome. Help.
4) Bickering, sniping, arguing and flaming is productive, supportive and leads to the answers we are looking for when?
5) In the appraisal section of the forum, about how many names does it make sense to post at once?
