Which open source blog or ecommerce solution for my new site would you suggest?

Hey everyone. I am starting a new company selling used boats. I am in the process of trying to choose what I should use to help build it.

What I would like is a pretty simple 1 column website. I would have a home page and a "boat showcase" section with several pictures for each boat along with info. There would be no store. Customers would e-mail or call if they would like to buy.

The website would need to have both an english and french version.

For the moment I am looking at either Wordpress with a translate plugin or Zencart. I like Zencart since I can make a multi-language site right out of the box.

Do you guys have any suggestions or other alternatives? Thanks alot!

This is a rough (very rough) example of how I would like to format the site.

After looking at several blogs I settled on using b2evolution (http://b2evolution.net/). It CAN be a little confusing if you are new to blogs or even if you have been using blogger and WP. But it comes with the option to have a photo gallery/blog that is connected to your main blog or blogs. Your one site can easily have many blogs if you want, but since you mentioned the boat photos I though it would be great. Of course, you can just post the photos into each blog post as well, but using the gallery would allow you to make "sales pages". There is no cost for b2e and chances are your hosting account is configured to easily install it with Fantastico or Scriptelicious.

Using a shopping cart like Zen Cart is also a great idea. Better really if you are mostly going to have sales pages and don't need a blog. But if you can maintain a blog it will really help to drive traffic to your site and in your posts you can link to items you are selling. What I don't know is how likely someone is to buy a boat online without seeing it? So a shopping cart might limit you. On the other hand, shopping cart items may be picked up more easily in Google and other sites.

I think a free Weebly.com site would do everything you need. It would also make it easy to try out your design ideas since it is all drag and drop with no coding required.

It looks like based on what you are trying to do Wordpress would NOT be the most appropriate choice and likely not a blog. Unless of course you wanted to update new blog posts of new boats available for purchase or deals going on.

I assume you are looking for mostly a local market? French and English would this be near the Great Lakes or in Quebec at all? Just curious cause I know a thing or two about the market and the target audience.

Users will likely want a stable page without all of the bells and whistles like you stated. Lots of photos and the contact info. Best of luck.
