Recommended Wordpress plugins

Hmmm. What specific kind of wordpress plugin/s do you want?

Honestly not sure, I've never really used wordpress that much and I was just wondering what other people use and why.

WP Super Cache is a must.

These ones are also nice:
Tweetly Updater (Updates Twitter when you create or edit a blog entry, uses no_url_shorteners for short urls)

Social Bookmarking RELOADED (Social Bookmarking RELOADED - Add the social bookmarks services's icons to your articles in your blogs in order to submit them easily. Plugin based on Apostolos Dountsis one.)

Auto Tags (Tag posts on save and update from tagthe.net and yahoo services.)

Now the tags one is good if you don't like tagging things yourself, but it's no replacement for hand-done tags.

Do a search for them in your Wordpress installation admin menu -> plugins -> add new.

Make sure you've got some google analytics (or similar) in there somewhere.

Akismet - you can get a free API key via your wordpress.org account.

Admin Management Xtended is great for high content sites.

Clean Contact - form plugin.

Google XML Sitemaps - makes it easier to use analytics.

Twitter tools - probably the best integration between wp and twitter.

Sorry to hijack the thread but does super cache change all your permalinks to .html files?

I have this older list I copied from an older install of my multi-user site with wordpress-mu, I still use them but newer versions in the new wordpresss 3.

How about with WP3? That has custom menu support?

WP 3.0 and up have custom menus, yes. But everything before 3.0 needs extra plugins to tweak the menu. I've got quite a few sites and friends who run older versions of WP.

Personally, on all custom themes that I develop, I list the pages to include/exclude through a php query. For any purchased or existing themes, I use menu plugins.

I second the vote for Social Bookmarking Reloaded, and of course Akismet is pretty much de rigeur for WordPress.

Other plugins that you might find useful really depend on the site. I don't use all of these on every site I build with WordPress, but I have used them all with some regularity -- sorry for length of list but I tried to add some details for how I use them.

What Would Seth Godin Do? A great and simple plugin that pops up a suggestion to new visitors to subscribe to your feed. You can customise the greeting to also add other messages intended for new visitors; doesn't have to have anything to do with your feed at all.

WP-Print If you're running a news, commentary or article site, WP-Print is unbeatable for producing quick-loading, printer/PDF-friendly versions of your posts.

Exec-PHP Enables you to insert PHP snippets into posts.

Subscribe to Comments If you're building a community and want to foster comment flamewars, er "topical discussion," then StC is a good plugin that makes it easy for readers to get updates of posts on which they've commented. Use in conjunction with the WordPress setting Nested Comments (not a plugin, but a setting you change from the dashboard menu) and the WP-Gravatar plugin and you've got yourself a mini-forum going.

Breadcrumb NavXT If you use subcategories, or cross-post among different categories, this plugin adds a simple "Home>Category>Post" type of navigation linkset to the top or bottom of your posts.

Tagaroo Completely awesome plugin that scans your tags and keywords and pulls up possible images for you to add to your post before you publish. Scans Flickr, and only returns results that it can verify are available to be shared. You have to register with Calais for this plugin to work, but it's free.

Viper Video Quicktags If you get videos from more than just YouTube, or create and upload your own, Viper Video allows you to add a standard size and stylesheet to all posted videos from most of the major video sites -- ie. it makes all your videos fit your blog the same way regardless of embed source.

Wordpress Related Post Plugin Searches for related posts, and lists your most popular posts if it can't find related ones.

WP-Contact Form Super awesome and easy contact form. I actually no longer use this on new builds as I came up with a framework to add my own into themes, but I still have it running on literally dozens of sites and wouldn't change it for the world.

Ping Optimizer Keeps your blog from hitting your ping list when you edit or otherwise update a post. A real lifesaver if you're prone to updating stuff.

Wordpress.com Stats A not-too-horrible stats program that Automattic came out with. It's not great, but as far as a simple, barebones stats program goes it works well enough.

GD Star Rating As name implies, allows users to rate your posts with graphic stars. I tried virtually every "rater" plugin in the Codex and found GDSR to be the one that worked best for me and had the best customisation options.

Image Drop Shadow Uses jQuery to add shadows to posted images, giving them a quasi-3D effect.

PixoPoint Menu Best plugin I've found for creating drop-downs.

Tweet Blender Great tool to manage Twitter feeds that you repost on your blog.

News-Ticker uses jQuery to create an animated "crawl" of your blog headlines similar to what you see at the bottom of the screen when watching TV news.
