More money from developing or selling domains?

Okay so I am wondering what do you personally make more money on in a given year - purchasing domains or the development of domains (adsense/affiliates/advertising/etc.).

To go with that answer - is this your full-time, part-time, or free/extra-time gig

I was just wondering, because I am starting to really do my homework.

Because I am a graphic designer & marketing manager. I have been interested in domains for the past 2.5 years and have been buying some, going forward I have a plan, my first year I want to take:

40 domains - develop them with a goal of an average of $1 a day, that comes out to $14,600.

From there I am going to step it up the next year raising my goals. If anyone is still reading... would this interest you? I am also thinking I might start a blog of my plans, trials, tribulations, and thoughts.

Wondering if anyone out there would give it a read.

The only reason I buy domains is for development, so I guess development. The ones I do 'flip' show a decent return, but if it's a good name, that's kinda like burning the furniture. I much, much prefer wool to mutton. For me, it's all about the dev.

$1 a day isn't as easy as it sounds, but if you're decent at development and SEO and own the right name platforms, then it becomes easy.

More money by selling because you don't have to invest a dime on development, hosting, contents, time consuming jobs..... Also to benefits from earnings (affiliate, ads...) you need to spend lot of time on SEO but if your domain name is Generic and have high types in then it's fine otherwise it's better to sell domains rather than develop a website waiting for eanings. Some web designers have found a way to make money with domains by doing what we call website flipping, they develop website and sell it witin a network of famous forum or ebay.

"Domainia" isn't sustainable, where people with IQ's of 90 can make 50X returns by trading sardines.
Development of meaningful information channels and earning from your control over the eyeballs is very sustainable.

Interesting incites.

I feel like there isn't much to development, no offense.

I really feel like development is just planning, persistence, and time.

There ISN'T much to development.
Hell, with sourcing, you don't even have to know anything to get it done!

"The soak" is the big one... Sometimes, you're developing something today that might not generate a fantastic revenue stream for 2, 3, 4 years. Given the way search engines emphasize trust and age, this is getting more and more important. This is also what separates the men from the boys, as impetuous children don't have the attention span for this to invest their efforts in something that doesn't generate an immediate return.
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/showthread.php?t=604868
It may generate a more reliable return and offer a far more durable revenue stream, but since the seeds don't sprout NOWNOWNOW, they go join up with whatever mania has the largest population of like-minded idiots.

Development isn't "hard" nor is it "expensive". It's just work.

Well said Dongsman.

So what do you think of my development blog/case study idea?

Following and documenting all my work in going for a goal of 40 domains in 1 year earning $1 each.

Yes, I agree, $1 /day is not that easy for 40 + domains. I found I can do that with one or two sites fairly easily, but as my sites increased, the average went way down.
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/showthread.php?t=604868

It's all about targeted traffic in my opinion. If you can generate tons of traffic then the money will follow. Even my ugly sites make money if they are receiving some decent targeted traffic.

Selling domains is much cleaner and in some ways easier. A combo of the two is also highly effective. A domain with backlinks and a high PR that ranks high for a competitive keyword will be worth much more than an undeveloped domain. A company that is spending lots of money on the Adwords content network will likely see the value of such a site/domain.

The tough decision is whether to sell or not! Take a nice 'one time' payment, or keep the property and collect the residual income?

Good luck with your sites and blog.

good luck with your quest. you'll probably get some good results on some names, flip some and drop some others over time.

I'm still getting my feet wet with development but as others have pointed out making a $1 a day per site is not as easy as it sounds. Google does give a significant search engine boost to exact match phrases for .com and .net domains and other extensions still receive some benefit (more experienced developers seem to comment that .org and .info get good results but I have noticed .tv doesn't get as good results). In either case, you will have to check the search volume and competition for the domains you noted and start with the ones with the best potential - lowest competition and highest search volume. You can still get a fair amount of traffic for longer-tail terms even if your site isn't on page one for the high-volume search phrase. One site of mine is only on page seven of Google for the one-word search but receives traffic for dozens of phrases which include that one word. Monetization of traffic is not so easy. Click through rates for Adsense and affiliates are very low. Best of luck.

You're better off developing a small number of QUALITY sites and aiming for $10-20+ / day - it's a lot easier to maintain and more likely to produce stable income.

You can get good click through (and conversion) for affiliate programs IF your site delivers exactly what the visitor is looking for.

Thank you again everyone.

As to developing quality naes and shooting for $10 a day and such. I am taking the approach that my stat off names are pretty good. Especially ones such as: DigitalCamcorders.info, MotivateChildren.com, and FlowerGirlDresses.info.

So with all these sites the AVERAGE I am shooting for is $1.

Then after that goal is accomplished I intend to try and shoot for $2 a day and add more sites and so forth. Eliminating names that aren't doing well, so forth. Just working on taking it slow.

I say
GO FOR IT.
your names are Ok for development
Your thinking of $1 a day is Sound.
YOU CAN DO IT.

Never listen to the .info's are crap mob.
I have monetised HUNDREDS of info's with adsense only
When done with aff. or targeted links they can make impressive incomes. Maybe not to same level as a GREAT .com , but still above development & renewal cost.
Checkout link in my Signature for an example of .info that makes renewal cost daily

In the end I think it comes down to doing what you like to do. If you enjoy the activities involved with flipping domains you will probably do well with that. If you enjoy development then that will probably work for you.

Alright well I have developed my first mini site - I just have to do a little more work. Waiting to be accepted by one advertiser so I can put an affiliate link at the bottom and also need to flush out the book and DVD section.

Yeah so far it is going pretty good, on the first page of google for "bartender employment" just want to try and secure the #1 spot.

I still need to work out some SEO issues to get more headway on other phrases I am looking for.

Seems it could be very profitable so far.

it's very hard to make money from selling domain names IMO,
since most of good domains has been registered already,
why not develop these domains?!
