Competitions?

Hey

Im in the process of building a new website, its a very large project and to be honest its taking a whole lot longer than I had planned... its beginning to be arduous.

So to give myself a bit of a breather Ive started to think a little more about things further down the line... and one thing that always happens to me is that I'll spend a lot of time and effort on coding a site but when I finally get it up and running I struggle to get any noteable traffic.

So I was wondering if anyone here has ran a competition to build up a bit of traffic/a community... Ive been purchasing a couple of bits when I've seen a bargain - nothing over the top, a handful of small Mp3 players, USB sticks with the plan to run a competition for the first few months.

What have been other people experiences in this sort of thing?
