Database content for sites.

How does one go about obtaining DB content to put on a site? I'm very green at this, so plz bear with. Have searched and am finding alot various existing DB's on sites, but haven't found the magic query words yet. Are there pay sites for DB's (in general), that someone might suggest?

Specifically, I am looking for a list of first names to put on NewBaby.Name, a site I am working on. The US gov has a link to their census bureau w/ a huge DB of names and stats and there are, of course, other sites w/ large DB's of first names, so the info is out there, but I figure there still is room for a new entry, and I have a few new twists in mind.

What is the legality is of taking info off the net and re-disceminating it? In what *form* is the info free and where is the line drawn between public and proprietary?

I know of an instance related to databases, where a site is crying "foul". The designer of Spybot is claiming that another spyware program, BPS SpywareSweeper has stolentheir database, sighting some programming language that is peculiar to the SpyBot program as proof.

Anyone point me in the right direction for obtaining a first name database or database info services in general. Also would like to hear something about the legality issue.

Many TX.

database owners sometimes place 'red herrings' in their database, to be able to later identify stolen lists. For example, I could add the made-up name 'remiquo' in my database. It currently returns no google results, so if that name ever shows up on any other site, then I would know that that site stole my database.

I'd explore the possibility of using the census list. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that such census data is public domain.
