Question Picture Categorisation

Hi,

I am currently redesigning certain parts of CityPics.org and one of them is how pictures are categorised. At the moment its the classical gallery system (user -> gallery -> picture) but I am looking for something more flexible and thought about leaving out galleries overall and have the pictures be loosely bundled together (user -> picture) and having a tag system at the same time which gives each picture proper tags/keywords.

I'd like to hear your opinion. Would it be better this way? Should I keep the current solution or do you have a completely different suggestion?

Thanks!

As a photographer (of city life and architecture at that), I like the idea a lot. I'm no fan of rigid gallery hierarchies, and I've come to rely heavily on tags in Adobe Bridge when viewing and sorting thousands of photos.

Of course the key is tagging them in a timely and effective manner

You could also simulate galleries by assigning a specific gallery tag to each image that belongs in that gallery. I've done that, along with creating a date tag as well so that I can sort/group/view by shoot.

Thanks cef, so basically you'd opt for a dynamic tagging instead of galleries?!

Other comments or suggestions highly appreciated.
