I just got into a web directory myself so I may not know everything about them but I have done my research. They can be a success, especially if the domain name you are using for it as PR. From my experience the only real money you will make from it will be featured links (or normal links as well if you charge for them). I haven't had any clicks on adsense from my directory, except for my PSA ad that I was displaying a banner for my own site, that one got lots of clicks, but an actual ad never got any.
They are not something that will give you a big turn around quickly unless the site already has PR, but if you hold on to them get the word out about them, get some good back links for it and build up a good PR for it, it can have a good ROI.

I dont personally believe any new web directories will make an outstanding profit. You wont get many advertisement clicks, because anyone there is normally looking for a particular website on a special topic.
With the development and popularity of search engines, there is little incentive for other sites to submit their links other than page rank. Therefore if you have no page rank, your site is quite useless.
All in all I think the only real profit to be made through websites is by coming up with a unique idea never done before. Copying concepts as simple as directories isnt going to work anymore.
That's impressive...how did you get the word out about your website? I also recently started a directory website for design freelancers to submit their links (FOR FREE), but I haven't gotten many submissions. Good Luck to you!
There's already too many out there, it's an over-saturated "market".
Not trying to get you down but unless you invest thousands into it, you'll never become the next Yahoo or DMOZ.
I am not sure I opened one awhile back not any submissions but haven't really spent time on it plus it probably isn't all working but it is PR3 but still nothing. I would say directorys could make something if they got real big and high PR.
I would like to open my own directory but i really dont no where to start. I no i would never make a huge profit from it but im new to web design and it would be a good start for me so if anyone could help i would be more then greatful. cheers.
