Caution "It Takes Money to Make Money" <-- Fact or Fiction?

The internet.

You want to be successful, but in order to work your way to the top, chances are, you'll likely need to invest a great deal of money.

Let's say you want to be very successful. You want a good domain, but since they're all taken, you have to pay someone $700 for a NICE one; something memorable, like eNation.com.

So what's next? Chances are you'll need to hire professional web developers; people who will make a nice website for you, yet know the ropes well. They code and do the graphics -- $800.

Now what? Well, you'll need to pay for a nice, reliable server. You want to start out smoothly, but don't have a lot of cash at hand, so you get a decent server for $20 a month.

Next you want to get the word out. You pay some for advertising; just enough to make the site more attractive for audiences on a small scale. Then once the site has a good-sized community, you pay that extra $2000 (at least) for QUALITY advertising.

Let's hold it here; All the big-time sites put a lot of cash into their projects and as the saying goes, "it takes money to make money," seems to make the world of sense for the internet.

Don't get me wrong; unique and/or up-to-the-moment projects do well, but wouldn't you agree that in THIS day the saying holds true?

I've been working on some projects, but I really don't have much money to spend. Is there a way to make cash without spending a fortune? If so, feel free to share your recent experiences, I'd love to hear!

-Thanks

I say that it is very true. In most situations the more you can do on your own the better off you are as far as making money.

It takes resources to become successful on the internet. The resources you need are cash, technical skills, and marketing ability. If you're short on one aspect (such as cash), then abundance of the other two can compensate.

One thing the little guy has working for him is that of flexibility and speed. It takes forever for big companies to bring a product or service to market, while people like us can have *something* up and running in a few days.
