| Setting up a phpBB Forum? Hi all,
There appears to be a lot of interest in setting up a forum these days. I myself am jumping on that old bandwagon however I thought I would share the experience and let anybody join in.
After my first failed attempt (see signature - an example of what not to do!! - nothing works the way its supposed to do) I went back to the drawing board and approached it a bit more methodically.
Rather than just throwing up the board and letting it run, I went back to basics and decided to approach it from zero. I have created a testbed forum at http://www.wndp.com/testforum Everybody here is welcome to come along and see the approach I have taken. As each change occurs it is left to run before being uploaded to the correct forum.
This will be a purely developmental forum and thread with the aim of having people that are interested in them able to set up the technical side of theirs themselves. This is one of the most important aspects of a site - knowing how the backend of it works as well so that if something goes wrong - you can fix it yourself - or at least know where to start.
I will not be issuing the name of my forum as this is not an advertising thread. Feel free to laugh or cry with me as I get it on the road and also feel free to provide constructive criticism along the way.

| I've made a .tar for all the forums phpbb
and invision board
vbulletin too.
everything has been chmodded so all you need to do is install and rrun the install file and add a database.
quite easy i'd
the next atsk is getting members and hits a day. |

| Nice idea Brianryan however again that is going down the easy route and people might not understand the workings of their board
Also, how did you get round the licensing requirements for vBulletin for spawning it onto multiple forums - just curious.
Finally - it might be best if you added the database first, before you install the forum as you will have a large amount of errors appearing by doing it the other way around.

| if you have cpanel go to the folder icon named bulletin boards or something like that and then there will be phpbb that will auto install it.
Bryan thats illegal...so dont mention it.

| Download the zip file for phpBB and when you unzip it there should be a file called install hippo.
As the admin of the board you should have the ability to delete that post hippo. If you look at the posters name, you'll see that it is the same as the user name you installed with.
To delete the test category, goto forum management in the admin panel and the options should be there.
Corey, I agree it is pretty easy to install but it can be quite fiddly as well. For a lot of people setting out it can be an extremely daunting task to do even the smallest thing. Also, phpBB doesn't give instructions for setting up the mySQL db from cpanel amongst other things so before you know it, if you are new to this, you have loads of different sources of 'helpfiles' that can be more of a hindrance than a help.
red - if youa re still having probs then pm me and i can help from about 1700GMT today |
