Nothing IMO

depends on the name and software of the forum or skin or something but with no members and minimal traffic it aint worth anything.

at least in the thousands. this is a well established forum with many active users. You can generate more revenue then the cost to run it so its well worth a lot.

hehe...no there isn't. I'm still in the design phase of my forum but it's not really for profit. I just want to have fun with it.

Many hositing companies have a forum right out of the box with their service, so the set up is very easy.

The first problem with starting a forum is the inital content. If you don't have any starting posts, then no one wants to look at the forum. I am having this problem right now with my forum at http://bigdog2.com/forum1/ . If the forum looks empty or really is empty, then nobody wants to stop and look.

I ran a forum years ago call ShadowTalk, it was about metal detectors. They way I got it started was to go around get pick out some really good comments from other places, and post them at my site. I don't think this would be as easy to do now days, as I had this forum several years ago, but it has to look like something is going on. You can't just post alot of stuff yourself, as all will see your name a million times.

If you can get 1 or 2 buddies from a old forum to come to your forum, it is possible to get some threads started. Email and ask them if they would like to help. Also if you think they would make a good moderator for one of your forums, ask them. If it is an interesting topic they might go for it.

Anyone had any success getting a forum going from scratch?

Well, I would think it is easiest if you set up a forum for a topic with a large audience OR on a website or linked from a website that already is fairly popular.
