I like to be a rebell and play with MercuryBoard, BurningBoard, WBC, and other softwares.
Still trying to gather enough money to afford Vbulletin though. Phpbb is what I started out with, and I'll never turn my back on it.
Not too big of a fan of Simple Machines.

I could see why people are drawed away from Mercury. The template system requires for a lot of chance. The staff is great, if you ask me.
Pun is good if you're looking for something simple and fast.
Mybboard.com is going to release Gold in the next few months. Many people claim that MBB is a "future competitor with the top 3", but I'm not sure. It seems some of the staff came from XMB (which scares me, heh) and there's still a lot of bugs. Also, from what I've seen, Gold isn't going to be that big of an improvement.

Maybe because it's not that popular yet?

I agree, MyBB is like the "free" version of vBulletin. It's sure to be a hit when gold is released

i will never use IPB after seeing the code in the earlier open source versions. It was a mess, there were unsanitised variables in half the sql queries. i heard its better now that they're charging for it but the name still conjurs up bad images.

I use phpbb because it is free and you can get a lot of great styles for it. Start with this especially if you are starting out and don't have the balla dough.

I just looked up fusionbb. It's located at
http://fusionbb.com . The price looks pretty steep though considering it's more expensive than vbulletin and it's still in beta.

I just went to their Pricing and Ordering link and it says $395 Pre-Sale Special for an owned license. Maybe you have to join their forum or something for better pricing or it's hidden somewhere. Either way, the forum looks pretty good especially for something still in beta.

I use VB. I bought the linc and just pay $30 a year to get updates.
Also watch out for phpbb, my friends server just got hacked last night because of a customer running phpbb and yes it was the newest version.
