yeah i liked SMF, the only problem was something became outdated on the server and it stopped working, and i couldn't be bothered getting my server owner to update

Both of those are good. I personally don't like phpBB because you spend so much time trying to keep updated with patches and it's almost like every month that you have to watch out for a certain hack method and whatnot.
Zend in a nutshell is an optimizer for PHP on your server. It helps speed up the runtime for your PHP code.

hmmmm simple machines forum (smf) wont work, and on researching its something to do with not having Zend or having an outdated version of Zend.... but i don't understand why it worked for a week or 2 then stopped
webtrickscentral.com is new, but very good. The template system allows for a lot, but there aren't too many templates out there to work from. The only flaw I found.
I heard good things about pun as well. I guess the truth is that phpbb is the best for full featured forums with an incredible amount of support and available mods. However if you just want a plain forums try pun.

phpBB is ok with the right MODs & Skins... I tried the original pun, didn't like it, but I may give it another chance... Also, http://mercuryboard.com is out there!
