Question a PRETTY silly Question

although this is not a techie forum, i hope someone can
give a reasonable answer.

some have problem with web hosting/transfers, uptime/downtime etc

so my question is
1. what does it COST to operate your
own mini server from yr home base.
Is it possible?

a. hardware costs?
b software?
c. operating costs?
d. how much skills is involved? cant you have remote assistance?

or is this all pipe dream>

all ideas and responses welcome

Red, the major thing to have is a static IP, they cost some money. Your computer has to be connected to the internet 24/7 and have the same IP the whole time. If you you have a cable modem, and you are connected 24/7, they still change your IP address every so often, so you never have a static ip. That is you first step on trying to get a home server.

some cable companies do give static ip's, my ip is a static ip, unless i request a change,
Most ISP's do not allow you to run a server, though most will never say anything if you do, some types of servers can be difficult to set up (ie a mail server)

it all is possible, i ran my own server for quite a while running a site of my own, i had it set up on an older computer of mine php/mysql, ftp

i closed it down, when my isp threatened to charge me bandwidth charges for what the server was using. So depending on your ISP you may have some charges, but most won't charge you for it if they do infact allow you to have servers running

well personally i had mine running on RedHat linxux , i was using it as a learning expeirence as well

though i have had servers running on windows as well, there is a program called PHPTriad, i believe it is still free, or you can still get free version of it, it includes PHP Mysql and Apache web server it automatically installs and setsup everything so that it will work

Companies that run their own In House Server, have an agreement with their ISP, usually most companies running In House Servers will have a T1 or T3 line

Red....it all depends on you connection speed..like Brian said, most companies that have an in house server run off T1 and T3 lines.

If you have a cable modem or high speed internet, and don't have alot of people visiting your site at once...then it will run good. Your cost will be very small, unless you don't have a computer to run your server on. Other then that...there will be no cost really, but only the time you spend on keeping it running.

But if you do this...make sure you have plenty of protection, firewall, antivirus software.....Just to be safe.
