Running a server

I'm hoping to run my own server just to get some learning experience. Problems -

First how do I install apache, PHP, perl and all that other good stuff. Read in another topic that XXAMP will do the trick.

Second - What do I do after that? I have the website built, but where do I upload it?

Third - Can the rest of my computer be hacked at? What if I only use one harddrive for my data?
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/webmaster-tutorials/143414-running-a-server.html

What is my badnwidth limitation?

Am I an idiot and should I just return to paying others for hosting?

System specs - Running Windows XP Pro, may consider running linux, but starting out on XP Pro. 2.0 GHZ with plenty of memory and hard disk space. Fast connection of downstream 40MBPS - 50MBPS average, 80 MBPS at peak, and upstream of probably something fast too but what the number is beats the heck outta me. I'm on a static IP and I hear that that is good for my domain name?

Lemme know what other info you may need.

Thanks in advance as I've been trying to do this project for years but end up getting stuck after installing apache halfway manually (not XXAMP)

Initially, host your files in some other servers and start your site running smoothly.

Then, Install Apache in your local machine and get some help from others to run the files. It is PHP,MySQL and apache, do in this way

1) Install Apache and select typical installation and finish it. During installation, choose port 80 for running all applications and users.
2) Intall PHP now by running windows installer package initially. During installation, it will ask you the http config file. It will located at apache installation directory/conf/httpd file. It will automatically hack to support PHP application files.

Then, you can install MySQL simply.

Copy your files under htdocs directory and start running your applications. After getting familiar in PHP,Apache and MySql configurations and security issues, then buy a static IP and again get help from people to run it.

I've got my server partially up and running. Thanks for your help!

I already have static IP as it is part of my connection package.

I'm just having trouble installing perl now and Can't figure out how to get it to work, Tried the xxamp perl add on package as well as installing it manually but to no avail. Any suggesstions?

Apache, PHP, Mysql and all those are downloadable from thier sites... Also, depending on what linux version you are using usually has these pre installed...

If not, you need to get the RPMS. THe RPMs are not hard to install, and even a noob could do it.. Al it requires is a base knowlede of Shell and Perl..

Rep is appriciated
