Awful 1&1 bash thread

I am creating a thread for the purpose of warning internet users about 1and1.com

This by far is the worst company I have ever dealt with. I signed up for hosting accounts but kept on getting them wrong because I am not too much of a computer literate (that is for my programmer). Somehow I got signed up for 6 different accounts that continued to bill me AFTER they had been canceled. I called 1&1 and after complaining and threatening they finally removed all but 1. Well I had still 90 days to cancel and I did within that time. So now I have a canceled account and a recurring billing cycle. OVER and OVER again until according to their TOC it will magically renew itself upon my inaction.

So I delved a bit into their Terms and voila a 90 day money back guarantee. Am I saved? Nope because beneath the fine print in something called misc terms are terms contradicting all their guarantees.

BUYER BEWARE YOU ARE IN FOR A SCAM
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/web-hosting-discussion/640466-1-and-1-bash-thread.html

STAY AWAY AT ALL COSTS

Any more horror stories I know they are out there. There are tons of anti 1&1 threads

If you decide to stop using the service before the end of the money back period you shouldn't explain anything and must receive refund immediately.

They have me on record canceling on Dec and I started the service in Oct well before the ninety day money back guarantee. I kept on getting the runaround from everyone even management. I told the supervisor if he didn't refund my money as stated in their policy they can keep their hosting money and I will warn every man woman and child about them for the entirety of my contract.
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/showthread.php?t=640466

What else is weird is my contract is canceled but I am still getting billed......so it seems to me as of now I am just fulfilling their contract w out garnering any real services.

Any other horror stories out there?

Sadly it's not the first time I read of cancellation related issue at 1and1. The service itself is quite good though, in terms of uptime and server performance. Other hosts do have things to learn from them in that respect.

I am a bit scared of the time when I'll have to cancel though.

If their automatic renewal, which you may or may not know is turned on, tries and fails to bill your credit card, they will still consider the domain active. Eventually they will turn you over to collections. The other registrars I have dealt with just let the domain expire.

If the client has submit a cancellation request though, there is no reason for their account to continue to be automatically billed

yeah. stay away from 1and1

their domain management is a joke. and they can take up to 8 hours to register a domain (yeas. it's true).

they can be the most honest guys in the world but when you make such a complicated method of canceling a domain your image goes down the pipe.

also, some domains that are not renewed mysteriously go to other users in 1and1 before being drop to the public or being sent to an expire house. don't know if 1and1 has a home made expired domain auction running though.

Just had another run in with them. They sent me to collections on one of my accounts without even notifying me I had an outstanding balance all while taking money out of my account. This time I turned them into the BBB and ripoff report. I suggest anyone else who has these problems do the same.

JUST A WARNING FOR ANYONE WHO IS GOING TO USE THEM PLEASE READ ALL OF THEIR TOS THERE ARE ABOUT 4 PLUS OF THEM ON THE SITE

what a bunch of crooks

Hopefully this thread serves as a guide for others. My job as a consumer who has a nightmare experience and others who share the same is merely to spread the word. We may not have the money or power to fight a company of this level but we do have a voice. It was a learning experience for me and I don't want it to be for other people. Let my mistake serve as a lesson to any potential buyers. I'm sure all of us have a lot better places to spend our money and time rather than dealing with a company that takes you to the cleaners.

I used to use godaddy (and still like their commercials ) but switched to 1and1 because my brother recommended them and they're a little less expensive. I've never had a problem with them and find them easy to use (thought I only use them for domains, not hosting). I've never tried to cancel an account. Hope that if I need to, it works, but in the meantime I'll just say I've never had a problem with them (again, for domain reg).

That said, I have had bad experiences with other big companies (not domain related) and understand the frustration.

Very good point!

I think almost all companies will have at least 2% of customers that are unhappy. The key is to avoid the companies that have 98% of their customers unhappy!
I'm not really sure where 1and1 falls on this.

Collections? Wow. I haven't heard that term in a while. Did you really owe them money, and how much?

I had two domains which I didn't realize were on automatic renewal. The credit card they charged declined. I ignored their pay us now emails assuming the domains would drop, and a few months later got a letter from a collections agency. I responded within the 30 time frame to the effect it was not a legitimate debt and didn't hear from them again. I haven't pulled a detailed credit report since then to see if they reported it.

It is strange why did not you get any notification from your domain name registrar and from payment gateway.
Are those domain names lost for you now?
