Can you recommend me of a hosting provider?

Hi!

I intend to launch a new website.
It requires a lot of disk space, because of importing data from different websites
and also scalability (room to grow). I need full root access (php.ini, httpd.conf or .htaccess at least),
and I need impeccable support.

For that, it seems a dedicated server would be best. However, given that costs about 200$/mo on average, and since this is a new, and probably never-to-be-profitable website, I need a cheaper alternative.

So far, the most suitable option I've found was inmotion's VPS plan.

Do you recommend of any other ones for my situation?

Thanks a lot!

You could indeed start out with a VPS (fully managed if you're not a server admin). You will of course have to upgrade as needed, if the site gets popular.

Personally I've been using a Liquidweb VPS, and it's been very stable. Some other hosts with good reputation would be wiredtree, futurehosting, knownhost, servint.

Make sure you look for specials or coupons as they can save you quite a bit of cash.

It definitely sounds to me like a VPS package would be best for you. What sort of budget do you have? Do you feel comfortable managing the VPS yourself or would you be looking for a managed VPS package?

My budget is up to 50$/mo.

A managed environment could be pretty sweet, but I also must have root access (php.ini, httpd.conf or at least htaccess available).

$50/mo for a managed VPS is very reasonable. You will also get full root access. Any specific platform or control panel you are looking for?

linux, and I still haven't figured out the benefit of owning cpanel. It looks outdated, and if you ask me, I'd just rather have SSH and simple directory structure than an avalanche of unbridled little annoying icons!

I agree with Sean, however getting started with VPS or even dedicated server is not vise. I think you ned to get started with shared host and then in future if that will be needed you will move to VPS or dedicated server

I understand, and I have thought about that, but there's no way a shared hosting plan could offer me 40G+ disk space that I desperately need.

Why do you need 40GB Disk Space especially if you are now starting?

I'm using different apis to populate a db, directories with images. Although this is just a new project, it will require this amount of diskspace after a couple of months. I realize I can always upgrade to a different hosting plan, I just need to find a good compatible package to fit those terms for the next year or so.

After a couple of months. Don't rush to spend money. Start small and work your way up. A good web host is scalable and even a bad one is transferable.

A VPS is definitely best for you. Make sure the VPS is managed. With your budget, I'd lean towards getting one with Virtuozzo

I was taken aback by the fact that they don't provide live chat (neither of them), but require you to leave a ticket. Knownhost got back to me after 10 minutes or so, but still it's not an immediate response, like inmotion for example.

Have you experienced any frustration by that?
