![]() | How much will I have to do for a VPS hosting Because I've been in max_user_connections hell for a while now, lol, I'm been giving lots of consideration to switching to VPS My hesitation, which I think I've said before, is that I don't have any idea HOW to do this. I mean, I can learn, but I have a job where I can be away from the internet for long periods of time. So I guess my question is, how much tending will a VPS take? How much will I have to do to keep it going day to day? I don't want some problem to happen, and if I'm not online for a week, nothing gets done and the site is down all that time. Thanks |

![]() ![]() | If you don't want problems to happen, purchase a managed VPS. The web host will take care of maintaining OS updates, security patching and installing applications. A managed VPS can cost you $50/month. There is Windows and Linux. Windows VPS's come at a extra cost due to licensing fees. If you choose Linux, get CentOS. Make sure you also purchase cPanel. A cPanel VPS license can cost you $15/month. WiredTree - Managed VPS | VPS Hosting | VPS Server | VPS Web Hosting | WiredTree

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | You have a lot of different options when considering a VPS. Do you have any certain specifications?

![]() ![]() | I think you are talking about management. You need to specify the following things for yourself: 1. do you need full time management? 2. Do you need part time management ( will be cheaper for your monthly bills). And then according that you will do your search for the VPS solution Good luck |

![]() | VPS packages can range from $4/mo - $50+/mo. I think you need to be more specific in what sort of specifications you need for us to give you a more accurate quote. It sounds like you will need a managed VPS, which is obviously more money. If your budget is limited, perhaps consulting with a reliable shared hosting provider about your needs and see if they can help you?

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Have you ever used Putty and SSH before? You can learn a lot just by searching Google. Allow one or two long weekends to get it set up, and then everything gets easier. If you choose to do it yourself, then you learn valuable new skills, but some of the time you will be in a living hell , and you also need to worry about security. It's really very fun, if you can spare the time, and like new challenges. Also, with an expensive managed account you still need to worry about security, unless you carefully choose your host. FYI: You will want a control panel: Direct Admin is easy to use, better than cPanel, IMO, and sometimes offered very cheap along with a VPS. The only drawback to direct admin is some "advanced modifications" are harder (you need to read the info at DA's forums) All the DA "cPanel type stuff" (i.e. Adding domains and making databases) is really easy and faster than cPanel) Kloxo/lxAdmin is often offered for free, and the security issues which made the news last spring all involved a shared hosting config, if you use lxAdmin alone then it seems to be safe. lxAdmin is also easy to use, and I usually have better luck when making modifications through Putty (i.e. installing php-xml/rpc *without* needing to risk re-building PHP. See, you can learn a lot, good luck. ps.
That's a problem, maybe all my advice will help someone else, Happy Holidays.

![]() | Out of curiosity, have you contacted your current hosting provider about this problem? Perhaps they can help you with it simply by increasing your limit

![]() ![]() | That could be good idea. But paying for extras might be more expensive thing then paying for the upgraded account

![]() | I think that you shall not get unmanaged VPS unless you have anyone to take care of the system administration. Having one that you can not manage might be discouraging for you. Another option is to get any kind of cloud or clustered shared account. |
