the amount of datacenters

Marblehost has now three datacenters - in UK, US and Sweden.
Why do the companies start more datacenters in various countries?
What is the sense in that?

it may be to establish a local presence, faster speeds, and backups / redundancy.

Sometimes people want web host from the same area they are from. And web hosting service provider gives them such opportunity. That is good strategy if you need to cover as many as possible target audience

Speed and redundancy, I’m in Australia and I visit google.com, their load balancing scripts take me to the closes google datacenter, being Sydney. If that is down, off to America I go.

If a host does this, your data may never be more then a 100 mille seconds away, huge improvement to the average 250 it takes me to get across the ocean.

I guess by setting datacenters in different countries you can reach local clients and offer faster connections. However if the company has only one datacenter, I guess the best place is the USA.
I've noticed some have moved to Asia and India to launch datacenters there, but bandwidth is pretty expensive there.

I suppose that is good for the customers as for the current as for the prospective ones. As now among one company they have opportunity to chose datacenter they would like to be in

I believe they are expanding. Maybe they find that important for their own business or have a lot of requests from the current customers.

I think marblehost has done that to make the life of their clients pretty easier.
In any way that's a good tendency when a hosting provider broadens out their services.
Think they are developing rightly.

Local host option

If you're hosting something like a .ca I'd prefer to have the hosting canadian based. Some potential hosting clients would look at that set up as a big bonus.

It's good for local SEO (for google.co.uk, for UK sites etc), but not speeds - nowadays bandwidth carriers are so good that a US-hosted site will be very quick to load in the UK, etc.
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/web-hosting-discussion/587836-the-amount-of-datacenters.html

But the local SEO advantage is definitely a good point

I agree for the bandwidth. But SEO. I suppose that doesn't matter where the web site is being hosted. The uptime is more important

It doesn't in fact mean anything. For instance serverpoint.com has only one (but their own) datacenter, and they are much better than many companies which rent a few.

From the other hand santrex.net is operating about six DC worldwide, obviously renting a places, and are also good enough.

There are companies who are reselling and the equipment does not belong to them, so many DC is just a trick.
