Overselling

Hi, just a quick question if a host oversold and you tried to get as much bandwith as your supposed to and they couldn't provide wouldn't that be false advertising?

I guess....

But you might have signed something you didn't intenend on signing in the TOS basically saying that they don't have to give you all the bandwith they said.

Overselling is a very common practice in the web hosting industry. Many of the value hosts actually have over 4TB of bandwidth sold, but they only use around 100GB because of the overselling.

In my opinion, if you are paying for it, it should be availabile in some fashion to provide. Check with your providers TOS and AUP to see if there is anything stated in there about the services rendered, and also just talk to them straight about it. Most reputable providers will do what they can to make good on the packages they sell, even if they are "oversold".

If your site isn't killing server resources (high percentage of CPU and MySQL mostly) you should be able to get whatever you pay for with no arguments from your host.

My opinion is not to oversell disc space, but bandwidth might not hurt to oversell on it a little.

If you have enough money to back up what you sell (example getting more servers if necessary or larger hard drives) you can definitely oversell safely.

you can ask whether the company oversells. They usually do if they have cheap plans

they can oversell succesfully because
1. real big timers with terrabytes of bandwidth will NEVER use them

2. only guys that might use them are newbie webmasters...with very little bandwidth usage...its a gamble...but i would think only 1 in a 1000 might actually reach the bandwidth required! ( and if they do...hosters will be just using the "unused" bandwidth from other clients.

3. so its a win-win situation! hoster gets his money! newbie webmaster is happy with his "unlimited" or high bandwidth!
