Hosting from domain registrars

Does anyone know any good hosting packages from domain registrars?

Don't do it.
Never keep your domains and hosting with the same company.

Anyway, more specifically, why would you want a hosting package specifically from a registrar?

Well It is not like to say "never" but it is better to get the hosting service from a quality hosting company. The smae with domain names. It is better to register them by yourself.

Most registrars offer limited control of their hosting accounts. Using the services of an actual hosting company typically includes more advanced features. One of the most critical differences between these two types of services is the control panel.

Go with specialists. It may not always be the case, but companies that are great specialists of something (like domain names) are rarely very good or at par with other services (like web hosting by domain registrars). Get your domain from a good domain registrar, and your hosting from a good reputable hosting company.

Is it a principal matter to get hosting from the same company that you buy a domain name with?

Some registrars consider hosting an "additional" service. As an individual directly involved in the hosting industry, it is my opinion that quality hosting is one of the most critical necessities for any successful website.

Think of it this way:

Would you buy a car from a gas station?

I agree, i wouldn't get hosting from a registrar, your not going to get the same level of support as you would form a specialist company like jagpc or softlayer. Get hosting elsewhere!!!

You should steer clear of hosts like hostgator btw when you're looking for a host, a bad omen if ever there was one.

DR couldn't have said it better though lol

I would not do it either. Historically a well known domain registrar who happens to provide hosting as well has shutdown several websites because they did not like the content on them and didn't want it associated with their hosting I guess.

Yes, godaddy is the biggest registrar and a big host too. I found their hosting to be reasonably good, but not ideal.

The problems with godaddy are custom control panel, and a not very helpful support. If you just need a basic hosting and know what you are doing, they might be okay. personaly I would suggest domain registration with godaddy and hosting at a abetter host like hostgator.

Registrar hosting and Linux or Windows unlimited ?

I have been think the same as Moonlight.

I have only recently got into trading and with a couple of websites already established prior to my new 'hobby' I have been looking at hosting where I purchase the domains - ie GoDaddy, but the replies here are what I have been saying to myself and that is not to mix the registrar and the hosting together.

Can anyone tell me if I can use Linux hosting - reason for asking I use Windows operating system on my pc and my hosts at the moment are windows based but I have just learned that Linux hosting offers more chance of unlimited ftp ( which I prefer) compared to unlimited websites on Windows based hosting and I am looking for unlimited hosting if possible simply for my domain purchases rather than park them and only take a 'minute' percentage of the traffic sales..

Do I have to use Linux to get Linux hosting or is it just a matter of taste ?

Cheers

Mr Witherkay

In a word, no. I use XP on my laptop and all my hosts use Linux ( CentOS ).
There's web interfaces ( e.g. cPanel, LxAdmin ) to control your hosting config via your browser, FTP to upload/download files and ssh clients like Putty ( if you like to use the command line to admin your server )

A lot of LogicBoxes (control panel) registrars have a good hosting plans.
Generally the hosting companies use their own control panel and their servers and use API (a sort of connection with the domain control panel) to register domains. You can see an example in my signature (hostinvent) Now it is closed for a control panel upgrade.

well no man can serve two masters..
either a domain registrar will be a best registrar but failed in hosting or vice versa better go with hosting provider if you want hosting and registrar if you want domain.

Question Linux

Ok, I am trying to make sense of what you are saying to me as I am pretty much a newbie really,

So..if I take out a Linux hosting package I can pretty much carry on as I am, I use terrapin to upload files to my current host and I have cpanel on one host and easy admin on the other and I work fine with these two so don't really want to start learning new packages unless I have to as it hurts my head too much not being fluent in this game ... if you know what I mean..and I have been looking at Hostgator this evening and I like what I see.
So..... if I am ok to sign up with them on windows XP are Hostgator a good host and will a newbie-ish like me manage on Linux do you think ?

I agree wholeheartedly. Hosting and domains together is a recipe for disaster.

Thanks for your answers, guys.
I think of registering a domain with EuroDNS.com and host it with Ahosting.biz. These companies seem nice in their services. I have read many positive feedbacks about them.

EuroDNS.com is not the cheapest, but with the widest possible domain name range, at the moment they offer discounts for .mobi and .eu

I think EuroDNS.com may be a good choice to register Europe-specific domains, is this what you are planning to do?

Oh, I've missed "AND hosting", then Namecheap.com, I've noticed they have added Business plans to their offers which have only 50 accounrts on the server, I'd say it's what other hosts call dedicated plans.
