Something MUST be done to protect us designers from getting scammed. I understand that we should still watermark our images, but still, something NEEDS to be done.

There has been an increase in scams, please take action mods.

this is why contests are no good, I have 3 designers employed by me that do designs ranging from 100-30,000 dollars and nobody starts work until 50% of the money is payed upfront and a contract is drawn and signed. I don't see how the mods are responsible for this, point blank don't enter contests or lift a finger until 50% of the dough is secured. They can view your portfolios to decide who they wanna go with for the design. But entering contests like this always leads to bad results or unwatermarked images being stolen.

that's messed up. Honestly...saw the contest...and didn't bother...I'm thinking i'm done with this contest thing. Will your submission was really impressive, I'm sorry that happened...but it seems that you can jamz got scammed but in the long run it's something that should bother everyone that takes part in NP contests. I'm really only gonna take part in contest I THINK is valid.

At least the admins did some about it.

ReliableHosters.com, sorry if I came across as blaming the Mods. In no way was I intending to point the finger at the mods, I was just saying that they should take action now, since they have the power to do so.

no I feel bad for you guys, but in a small way you kinda open yourselves up for the abuse, make sure you watermark everything or get 50% of the payment up front, contests are kinda bad, just link your portfolio in the contest thread and say "contact me if interested", I see these contest threads at many forums with the same results, everyone throws out freebies and then no one gets paid 80% of the time.

How about an NP$ ESCROW SERVICE! Mods could charge 50 NP$ or something to hold the money in escrow. I don't mind NP$ because its all going to doms anyway, plus it would contribute to the board.

good idea, but it's usually not the long term members that would have the np$ to pay that scam, most are the new guys that slip in get what they want and then are gone for good, so unfortunately I would stay away from new members until they are established with a good trader rating.

you have only been here since may and you already have 4 positive comments, so I think a new guy could contribute to the forum before asking for stuff, or simply pull out the paypal and pick the portfolio he likes and make a deposit to the designer before they start work, another option would be to pay the money to admin and let them send it to the announced winner if RJ or a moderator want's to get involved as previously stated by lextalionis.

A contest is a privilage which should only be granted to those NPers trust. Will7, I'm sorry for your lost time, but I hope you'll use my advice next time.

It's a good thing I had a sinking feeling it was a scam from the start... that's why I decided not to waste my time and enter. Anyway, some NamePros rules and escrow service should be established ASAP to prevent further disasters

well maybe its handy to make an subdomain and to upload all entries watermarked by " NAMEPROS CONTEST " etc.. so basicly you upload the image and it gets watermarked directly and gets stored when ever the contest is over it gets deleted :-p

altho i have to finish 5 projects and 2 are NP related :P

but ontopic again:

when i saw 100 gbp contest. i knew it smelled like scam. altho i was shocked the guy will7 i think didnt watermark ... what an shame

When I went thru the thread today and scrolled down, even before I saw the final post by that guy-whos-gonna-have-no-HDD-soon, I saw will7 and others not watermarking their work and i thought tisk-tisk-tisk :/

This was my last contest here until something like escrow is esablished. Just to much work for there not to be a winner from NP.

Last week even, the comps were getting 20 entries. Of the last 10 comps 8 have been duds, rips, or outsiders.

Seems most devs have gone to greener pastures.

Well .... some things Are being done to try to protect Designers here, but - You guys need to watch out for yourselves a bit as well. Placing WaterMarks on Images and Not Entering Contest(s) from New people with "0" Trader Ratings would go a long way ....

This is another Reason why We (Staff) Stress to not Freely Give Trader Ratings for silly things such as "I signed up to your forum for 3 Np$ and updated your Trader Rating as well" - This has nothing to do with someone's Credibility as a Domainer or Potential Client ....

I agree an Escrow service would be nice ... But it would also be very Time consuming to incorporate into NamePros - Maybe NP should become a "Paid Site" to help pay for such a thing ? <<<< Being Sarcastic there

Actually that's a good idea. I wouldn't mind maybe a $5/yr. fee, and I'm sure many others who are very connected to this board will.

Simple... staff set-up a Paypal account and contest holder has to send the prize to staff before his contest is approved. That way we're sure there's a winner.

There is simply too much risk in allowing contests to be started by users with a 0 trader rating. Basically that means the user is unknown and has no proven track record of paying for anything.

We must limit the starting of contests to users with a feedback of of at least 5. With the supporting vote of my fellow NP staff, I will make this an official rule.
