I prefer ASP for proof of concept work. It's what I know best. But, for more bandwidth intensive sites, JSP or PHP would work better.

Oh, I forgot. Ruby is a potential winner on all fronts.

ASP requires more memory usage, plus its also a bit slower than php. Although ASP does have the connectivity with activeX and internet explorer, its still not the choice on many of the web programmers today. PHP on the other hand, is far better in performance and bandwidth usage like stated above, it doesnt require as much memory either. PHP Is opensource, so its updated freaquently, and has more options than ASP has. ASP isnt exactly "cheap" the hosting for an ASP server is MUCH more expensive than a server with php. If your thinking about learning one of this languages, I would suggest learning PHP, the reason is there is more free resources online for PHP than any other programming around, and its free.

90%+ servers are linux.

With asp you limit yourself in the clients you can code for and also you limit the hosting you can get for yourself. Windows servers tend to be a bit more expencive.
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/web-design-reviews/147357-php-or-asp.html

I code asp and love it, I run a dedicated windows server though so I dont have to many problems with hosting.

I can say that php is more powerfull. What someone can do in PHP, I would need a asp component writen in VB or C to do the same thing.(uploading, image manipulation) PHP is always improving, as asp is dead, and has moved on to asp.net.

ASP.net on the other hand can do anything you need and more.
JSP can do anything really since you can call real java code from it. Its what most banks use for their sites.

Overall ASP IMO is easier to pickup and code. PHP code is not hard but takes a bit more patience and practice to know it properly.

For a beginner, ASP is far easier to learn, but PHP is easier to learn if you have experience with a programming language that it is based on C++, etc. IMO, PHP is far better than ASP, but ASP is great for casual programmers who want to knock out a quick script or two without having to bother studying more complex languages.

PHP simply rocks. I would vote for PHP and MySQL both as combo.

Nothing comes near them.
