If it as a myth as you say, then how do search engines index sites?

Well yes,

Allthough most search engines don't use meta tags i still think they are important to a site so yes you sould use them. And also don't forget about the title tag for each page - keywords in title tag makes a difference

Cheers

While meta tags aren't as important as they used to be, some search engines still use the meta description to display a synopsis on your site in search results. My suggestion is to use them whenever possible, but don't spend too much time on them.

Meta tags are important to maintaining a standards compliant coding structure. That is, provided you have some respect for standards

BTW, if you want the truth, go straight to the source....

Jimmy : Meta tags are not required - they are optional.

you can respect the web standards by writing valid code not by placing meta tags in your pages.

Best wishes,

Studio

What I am trying to do is have multiple languages in my meta tags to target foreign users.

Well i dont think that meta language tag is important.

The language you used on your site's content is.

i feel I am pretty good with meta tags... I attribute them completely to some of my most successfull websites.

if you dont think meta does anything, put up to sites.. one page each. On one, use meta tags..the other.. none.

put on adsense ads and see what happens with the ads, and in 2 weeks.

if you dont use meta tags, your only ripping yourself off.

I guess the thing to keep in mind about META tags is that they're *really* easy to fake and SEs know that so they give them a lot less weight than actual text or your page title. Maybe if your META description and keywords reinforce the text, headlines, links, and title of your page -- perhaps the META give you a slight bump in that case. I'm just guessing here. Anyone got any hard evidence?

not sure what kind of evidence I could provide you?

Of all the things I do concerning websites and domains.. Meta is the one thing I feel i can say I excell at. I managed for about a month once to get ahead of MTV on google when people typed in MTV itself.... I attribute that solely to the meta tags I had up... there was no other explanation.

Also, i think the most important aspect of meta tags is making sure you tell the spiders how often to crawl. for small sites/new sites..this is imperative. I generally set mine to 7 days.

7 days is pretty aggressive. I would hope you have something new for them to look at every 7 days or else you may get penalized. The MTV example is impressive but unfortunately short lived. Let's not be to "hare-like" lest we lose to the tortoise.
