Totally black or dark designs...

Am I the only one that refuses to visit a site thats totally all black or another dark color?

I have been looking at other NP members forums to see if I want to join and most are so dark with dark text that I can hardly read the site!

Why do they do this?

They do it because they think it's cool to be mysterious.

But I don't think there's anything wrong at all with black websites, the same problem can be had with a white site with light grey or yellow text. It all depends on the colour of the text, and especially the size of the text.

btw, Forums are a different story.

I typically don't like black/dark sites either, but in some cases "it's just right". I'm working on a little Ozzy Osbourne project at http://www.buyozzie.com that is all black. I still have a lot of work to do on it, but I couldn't imagine viewing an Ozzy site that had light colors.

I'm not much of a fan for dark websites because I find them less appealing for the average business. But look at some fields you need it, like you want a band's website to be black and styling. For a professional website though brighter layouts tend to work better.

Studies have shown though that white text on a black background is easier for people to read. I still prefer brighter layouts though, but I don't refuse to go to dark ones. That's wierd :S

I think the subject should be "Do you hate sites with unreadable text?".

i'm not a huge fan of dark colors, i like bright sites for the most part. Any site that uses green gets a bonus from me, if they use it well that is

I really like Dark themes & I work with them lots!

It all depends on the client I have, but I am completely open minded to colour!

Dark Sites

I think that dark sites can look great if designed proper. I would steer clear of using a darker site for a commerce site focused on products, however some sites can make good use out of a dark site, i.e., web design firm site, portfolio site, music related, movies etc.

Just my opinion though!

If using a dark background, like say a dark dark grey (almost black) I would use colors that pop like a bright orange or yellow etc so that it has a color contrast. But to answer ZuraX, I would definetly not use a black background with dark brown text, to illegible.
