I think it is not possible or you wouldn't get free hosting. You can get hosting for as little as $50NP a month for pretty much the same as what geocities offers you.

Agreed, while I have seen various scripts and code snippets to squash the Geocities ad code, all of them have secondary (negative) effects that wind up screwing up the page layout.

If your site is worth it - get a cheap host... or better yet, go for high end hosting if the ROI warrants it!

Veolus is recommended by myself. Nice deal. For $50NP a month you get 100mb of space and 5000mb transfer
