Why triplet hex (or CSS hex) color codes

Instead of color codes I often see such as #DDDDDD, #FFFFFF, and #999999, I sometimes also see the use of shorter form, #222, #FFF, and #999. I did a search on Google. They are called triplet hex or CSS hex codes.

My question is:
Is there any advantage in using triplet hex codes? Is there any improvement in the performance? When is a good time to use them?

Thanks.

Well if you mean using tags like red, blue, green, silver etc they do not cover the full range of available colors.

No, I mean: what's the difference between, for example, #FFFFFF and #FFF?

Interesting to know that some browsers don't support it, didn't know that.

*Goes and changes all the shortcut hex codes in his layouts.*
