WordPress 3.0 Advice

I'm getting nowhere fast in getting my problem answered either on the WordPress Forums or WPBeginner.com (where there has been no activity for 7 days including the approval of my post). So I'll try here.

OK. I've installed WP 3.0 and I've enabled Tools > Network. But I still see no way that a new signup can create their own blog on my website.
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/web-design-discussion/658477-wordpress-3-0-advice.html

On the WordPress Forums, somebody suggested I sign in a Super Admin and select "Options". What the heck is the Super Admin? Is this something different to the regular Admin? I don't see any "Options" option?

Basically, WP is only operating for me as a single user blog website, as far as I can tell. I want my visitors to be able to create their own blogs on my website.

I'm just a beginner with WordPress.

Your admin account is probably what he meant by Super Admin. With WP 3.0 or Wordpress MU even, there are Super Admins (you, and whoever else you add as one) and Blog Admins (your users).
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/showthread.php?t=658477

You'll see in the dashboard when you login that it says "Super Admin" on the top left menu block. Under that, is the usual Dashboard that blog admins have or WP 3.0 when not running as multi-user.

The Super Admin link will look something like this
http://www.domain.com/wordpress/wp-admin/ms-admin.php
the Super Admin / Options link then would be
http://www.domain.com/wordpress/wp-admin/ms-options.php

Halfway down the page you'll see "Registration Settings" section. The first choice is "Allow new registrations" and is set by default to: Registration is disabled.

If you don't see any of these, you may not have the Network enabled correctly yet. You should see this at the top of Tools / Network if it's enabled. "Notice: The Network feature is already enabled."

There are a lot of additional instructions on the page about creating a directory (blogs.dir), and modifying your .htaccess file

After logging in and going to your second link, I get "MultiSite support isn't enabled", which probably explains my problem. However when I click Tools>Network> It says "an existing Wordpress network was detected" Which I'd expect since I completed the 3 steps mentioned below it.

So how do turn on Multisite support, other than setup the network as described above.

One thing which was strange before was I never had a wp-config.php file on my website wordpress root directory. Only wp-config-sample.php. I thought this file would have been compulsory, but my website was working perfectly fine without it. So how in the heck did it know my database name etc, which I input when installing. This must be installed somewhere else, but I couldn't find it. Only when I input the network stuff into wp-config.php and uploaded it to my root directory did the network stuff appear. I know it was at least now looking at that file because I got the database password wrong the first time, and it wouldn't connect. So I know it is now reading this wp-config.php And this has define "define('WP_ALLOW_MULTISITE', true);" in it.

What to do now?

You have to have a wp-config.php in the wordpress directory. The wp-config-sample.php isn't enough to do anything. You might be looking/editing the wrong folder or wrong files so make sure you verify by investigating that further. It's odd that you were able to see anything at all, maybe it was looking at a wp-config.php somewhere else, which you should find and delete, after backing it up of course in case you have to put it back.

So, it's working now? What do you want it to do next? Maybe install buddypress, and one of the buddypress themes. This could be a good next step for you. It'll provide you with a theme ready for multiuser and signing up new bloggers.

Nope. as I said above "Multisite support isn't enabled". I've still only got a single user blog. Which is hopeless to what I'm trying to achieve. We can get to the other stuff later.
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/showthread.php?t=658477

I mentioned the wp-config.php file because I went looking for it to edit it for adding the network. It wasn't in my wp root directory. But the system was still functioning. I would have thought the install would have written this file (else how was my system working). I've looked elsewhere for it, but cannot find it anywhere. After adding this file to the root directory, I kind of accidentally proved that the system is now using this file, and not any other version hidden somewhere I cannot find.

Perhaps you could repeat the steps I need to take to get the "Super Admin" option to appear on my Menu of options. (I've done the three steps required to setup the network, but when I refresh my Dashboard, I don't get the Super Admin option).

Hi Stub,

WP 3.0 is a release candidate, so even it is out of beta status you can expect bugs and errors :-)

Just post here but read first, maybe someone else has the same prob):

WP is stating on the downlad site this:

If you are testing the RC and come across a bug, you can:

OK. I've got the Super Admin option now.

What I did was copy the define Multisite line from somebody's post on 1 of the forums (either wordpress.org or wpbeginner.com) before I added the other lines for the network setup. So I didn't copy that line again from the network setup instructions (foolish I know). I just checked the two version of that line, and the one I copied was invalid. After replacing it with the correct line, I get the Super Admin Option. So probably my problem is now solved. Thanks for all your help.

---------- Post added at 10:16 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:05 AM ----------

OK I need some more advice.

I firstly created 3 categories for blogging under my main wordpress domain. But then I thought I'd create them as separate blogs, which I did. Now these are 3 separate blogs entirely, and they are not reference at all under my main wordpress domain. Is there any way that I can reference all the existing blogs on say the front page of my main wordpress domain?

Also. I can't find any Register option in 3.0 RC1? Is this configured in the settings somewhere? I couldn't find it.

Finally. Is it possible to have/create sub-blogs of any blog owned by different people. It appears to me that there is only 1 level of blog below the main wordpress domain.
