webmasters what do you charge

I am currently putting together a website for a small NPO, they would like to know what would be the monthly charge to retain me as the webmaster. after the initial redevelopment of the site i dont anticipate too much work, just keeping third party scripts updated, backups, etc so im not sure what to charge. would like to hear from webmasters what you charge and how much work per month you put in for that amount.

If you're creating theme for CMS then charge per theme, if you're modifying site everyday then charge per hour for that work. But consider that it is NPO and make your charges such that they will not deny your offer and you'll not put more effort than you're getting paid for.

If the work is going to be very predictable like you describe, estimate how many hours it would take you per month and charge them whatever would make that come out to a fair hourly rate for you.

If they're more the type to throw all kinds of special requests at you in addition to the routine maintenance (and you should have a feel for this after developing their website), charge them a rate that includes "up to" x number of hours and let them know that there will be an additional charge for anything over that.

If the maintenance is negligible, bill them hourly and invoice them quarterly.

Basically, you don't want to charge them premium rates, but you also don't want to end up slaving away for sub-minimum wage either!

If it's for a small NPO, I'd probably offer them free hosting and get them to learn how to update everything on their own with no tech support.

no not going to happen, i have tried, been working with them for some time so I have come to realize that some people, no matter how easy of a system you put in, are extremely intimidated by anything technical.

I personally charge $175/hr for anything I do beyond what I do for lower pricing for customers I've been with a long time.

If I were you I'd charge them a flat hourly rate for everything you do beyond the initial redesign and leave it at that.

They will either respect someone and pay for your time, or try to get something for nothing. Don't let them get something for nothing.

I charge based on the number of updates, etc. In your case I recommend charging per the hour. Give them a flat rate and then give them estimates on the monthly updates you forsee, in hours, with a range of low to high.
