Need help on starting design business

So I want to start a web design business because I'm about to lose my job, and there really isn't a whole lot of prospects out there. I have a few leads, but I just don't think it is enough to really allow me to rely on financially. So how do I get my name out there to let people know that I can offer them custom designed sites and a competitive rate? I just need some ideas on how to get out there and find new clients other than people I already know such as friends and family. Please help!

Thanks!

Well its a competetive market and if you don't have a portfolio up you're going to need one for sure. I'd start by targetting local small businesses - if you get a couple site contracts out of them then you'll be able to start grabbing up some of the jobs offered online as well since you will now have experience and a portfolio.

Good luck.

Develop a couple sites to showcase your talents. Sites that are a topic of interest to you personally, or at least easy to do. Market them to show you know how to get traffic.

Of course I'm not talking about goofy little personal webpages. Pages of the highest calibre that you could even sell off oneday.
