Sick of wikis, WordPress, etc.?

Are these things ruining creativity? I remember back when it meant something to have a nice-looking/unique/organized website, but these days it seems as if almost everyone is using things like wikis, WordPress, etc. I can spot most WordPress sites within the first two seconds after the page loads and it's usually a disappointment.

I don't know where I'm going with this... I simply wanted to rant a bit. Feel free to ignore it if you'd like.

I agree. Itīs not very creative. But the most enduser just donīt know it better. They use mass products and they normally donīt know anything about security otherwise they would search for more secure CMS and blog software.

Wordpress is easy. Because of Wordpress, you can have a fully functional site, with content, up in minutes.

I like it for mini-sites - but I also enjoy doing my own coding. For that reason, I'm working on my own CMS.

Its not about what the site is running with but more about what the site looks like and feels like. Yes i know that people can pop out whatever you want ect ect ect. Though there are sites that you visit on a daily basis you prolly dont even know that run on wordpress.

Wordpress is just the core of a website, you can do just about anything with it. Check this site out to see some amazing sites created with wordpress: We Love WP

imho. content management systems are the right path. why creativity is ruined? anyone who got decent knowledge with html/css can skin those. it is a lot lot easier to deal with even on static websites.

anyone who doesnt have knowledge of setting up a website can do so in minutes with the help of those.

I have no issue with CMS and WordPress, they are great for giving professional looking sites. If anything, it allows people to take the time to custom create a site to stand out a bit more as well.

Some would argue that easy to use programs like these have given a "voice" to the little guy out there. It's a lot easier for the average person to start a blog and share an opinion we might not have otherwise seen.

Although at the same time, I agree, the problem is that we are now also bombarded with tons of useless content. For every good blog post there's probably 1000 useless ones.

Yeah, I realize WP is a good thing in many ways and I still use it myself from time to time. I guess what I'm getting at is that it's just so easy these days for someone to have a relatively good-looking site with easy navigation/etc. because it's practically done for you! If you want a different look, no problem! There are thousands of free and paid templates at your disposal.

Again, while this is all very positive it tends to irk me a bit. And the amount of message boards these days? Wow! Who hasn't run a message board at one point or another?

I remember around 2000 or 2001 when I first started web design... it was so different! Having a nice layout was much more difficult than simply installing WP/Joomla/etc. and message boards were not yet oversaturated.
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/web-design-discussion/619500-sick-of-wikis-wordpress-etc.html

I suppose I'm just reminiscing a bit.

Simply put: No, it does not restrict creativity. At all.

I use either Wordpress or MODx CMS for all my websites, it's just so much easier. I'm not a web developer, I don't know squat about back-end development at all. I work with XHTML and CSS, that's what I do.

It doesn't restrict creativity because you're not forced to use the default theme for Wordpress or MODx. It's extremely easy to use your own layouts in MODx because all you do is upload the template files as normal and then add a few variables to the code, boom done. With Wordpress it's a bit harder but it doesn't restrict creativity any less.

I fail to see how these things restrict creativity any less than using a free website layout site does. I can just as easily find free HTML layouts as I can free Wordpress themes, it isn't hard.

Honestly though, it means nothing to the end-user and to webmasters who don't even make the design in the first place. Many people who manage websites do just that: they manage the website. They don't care for how the back-end or front-end works and will happily pay YOU to be the creative mind in their business.

This is why I love namepros, I am always getting good ideas from here, almost every day. I had not run across modx before, so I checked it out, and it looks like a terrific cms! Tonight, I will try and build a site using modx.

It's not a bad CMS, just needs more documentation. If you can code Wordpress templates it ends up being easier, imo.

Wordpress, Joomla, and other open source products are good if your site requirements fit with them. If I feel there will be a lot of customizations and extensions, then I prefer to write my own CMS.

The irritating thing is when clients insist on using Wordpress for everything Sometimes, it's much easier to build your own CMS than extending Wordpress or Joomla.
