Can ya help a newbie out...

Ummm…. Hello.... am I in the right place?

Oh! the lights are still on in here… cool. It seems the water ain’t to bad here either... anybody got a beer?
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/web-design-discussion/59403-can-ya-help-a-newbie-out.html

My name is Gary but you all can just call me “G” (hope that don’t make an obscene smiley)

I am about as new to (good) web design as a newbie can be. I own a couple of business and do my own web sites (for myself only) witch is probably a big mistake on my part… oh well a guys gotta do what a guys gotta do. (Read: poor people have poor ways.) I do enjoy doing web design very much but unfortunately I kind of suck at it. I was hoping that perhaps some of you fine folks wouldn’t mind helping me along with some of the finer points of newbie web design so I don’t look like a real jerk off out in cyber space.

I am really looking forward to kicken it with you folks and I will try to be a model neighbor!

Cheers!

Hi G,

Welcome to the site! Probably the best thing for a new web developer to do is to really learn the software you'll be working in. That would be primarily your graphics editor, like Photoshop or Fireworks, and your webpage editor. I like Dreamweaver myself. What have you been using to design in?

RJ

Hey RJ,

Wow you guys are really on it… this is great!

Right now I am using FrontPage for editing and Fireworks for graphics. I am trying to move over to Dreamweaver but FP has given me some bad habits that are kind of hard to break. Kind of like once you have driven a VW your whole life it’s a little cumbersome to jump into a Ferrari and try to win the race regardless of the horsepower difference… know what I mean?

I know exactly what you mean. The interface and "way around things" feels awkward in Dreamweaver when you're using to working in FrontPage. I had the same experience when I first started with Dreamweaver five years ago after spending the previous two years working in other programs (including FP).

Advantages of Dreamweaver over Frontpage are too numerous to get into here, so I'll just have to recommend that you push through and try to get familiar with DW. It's a good investment of time and will be worth it with the results you'll get on your website projects. I really like the Dreamweaver Hands-On Training books. That's what I've used to master the software with. You can pick one up for around $20 (used) on Amazon.

That's where I would start! Hopefully some other forum members will chip in with their two cents as well. Have a good one,

Thanks RJ, you’re the bomb!

I think the worst thing for me to get past with dw is the lack of a spell checker. My spelling really sucks… Is there a checker in there some ware and I am just such a bonehead newbie that I haven’t found it yet?

Oh… The other thing I can’t seem to figure out is how to round over the corners on my pics in FW.

Thanks again man,

Cheers

Pressing Shift + F7 together will bring up the spellchecker. Or go to your top menu bar and open Text>Spell Checker to bring it up.

Dreamweaver is a million times better than Front Page, so its really worth putting the time into it.

I personally think great content and information is probably key and primary factor for any great website. Unless of course your creating the site for youngsters.
You can really, really suck and have no visualy creativetly at all, and still create a hot website if it has great quality content and is easy to navigate.

If those are your websites in your sig, looks like you're not too bad at all.

Ummm…. Shift + F7… Now I know it’s true, I am a bonehead…

Thanks for the tip. Everything I have read points towards Dreamweaver for editing. I will continue to move forward with learning dw.

Yes the links in my sig are my sites… thanks for the vote of confendence, makes me feel a little better.

Any idea on how to round over corners of my pics with Fireworks anybody?

Thanks… you guys (and gals) rock!
