Question about SE friendly URL's

Hello guys, before i start babbling on, here is the link to the article i read that gives 3 different ways to make search engine friendly URL's using php/apache/linux: http://www.sitepoint.com/article/sea...-friendly-urls

Now...
I want to use method 3, in a new script I'm making to sell to various people. However, i dont want to waste the extra time in having to develop it that way if its not needed. as long as the major search engines can read urls like this: www.domain.com/article.php?id=123
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/web-design-discussion/58161-question-about-se-friendly-urls.html

then im just fine, i dont want to have to add htaccess files and so forth if i dont have to.... so my question is... are the major search engine spiders (msn yahoo and google) at the point where they can read the URL's like the one above normally and efficiently? or do i have to change things around so they look like directories like this: www.domain.com/article/123/

P.S.
since my script will be sold right out of a .zip file, having to add/edit .htaccess files will be a pain, and will make the installation process a little longer and a little more annoying for people trying to install my script on their server....
