If you were going to take college courses in design programming what would you take to start
Perl I intro to perl
Visual Basic
Program Design
JavaScript I Java Script and web
VB Script 1 VB Script Fundamentals

I would think it would be most beneficial to be learning widely used scripting languages. I would think that the Perl and JavaScript classes might be the most useful.

I would go the e-commerce route which typically includes client side languages (ex. javascript), server side technologies (ex. PHP, ASP.net), and databases (SQL, MySQL, etc.)

I would definitely not pick Visual Basic or VBScript. Perl is quite widely used, though Python seems to be gaining a lot of popularity amongst ex-Perl users.

Perl I intro to perl - ive taken this - good class that allows you to get a scripting language under your belt. Will also help with your learnability of other scripting languages.

Visual Basic - taken - great course very useful

Try to find a database class where you can learn sql queries and such. Should be all set as far as programming goes.
