Both are Good Cart Softwares. Depends mostly on you. I prefer ZenCart though. It was simpler, but OSCommerce is Preferred for Wide Scale Payment Options.

oscommerce is probably a better choice for a bigger site, although i think you could manage with zencart.

and my oh my does the default oscommerce template look bad, lol.

My recommendation would be ZenCart, I prefer it over osCommerce.

Reasons:

- More active development, bug/security fixes updated frequently, new major releases in every few month.
- The only valid XTHML open source shopping cart so far. (I didn't know any other)
- Tableless, layout controled by CSS.
- Coding and template are separate (good for designer)
- Easier for future upgrade without breaking every code of your existing customization.
- Override template system, you never touch the original code, instead you work on separate custom directory, so if something goes wrong, just swicth back to original by clicking a button.
- More built-in features

Alzheimer's
I did an analysis based on my needs about 4 months ago; my needs:

1. Most features out of the box (zen-cart branched out from OScommerce a while ago and integrated many modules into their core)
2. Templates that I liked
3. Google Checkout (level 2 integration)
4. Google Products and Live Products export

I chose zen-cart at the end, and I am still happy with my decision. Also, the forums at zen-cart are very active and people are willing to help. The module developers are usually very active at these forums.

Although zen-cart already has many modules integrated in it, you will have to add them as you need them.

dont go with either. I suggest A Joomla and Virtuemart combo. OScom was kind of abandoned a few years back. Zencart is not so user friendly.

Another option is CREloaded. Its commercial, and a bit costly, But I have a copy of 6.2 which Id be willing to sell the rights too for less than you would buy from them. I bought the script but never used it. I ended up going with Joomla and VM. Im pretty sure I can tranfer the license to you.

OSCommerce is horrible. The code is a mess and the system uses horrible HTML. Try out Magento if you have the server capabilities:

http://www.magentocommerce.com/

Open source and free!

I wouldn't agree that OSCommerce is horrible, because it truely isn't. It's not the best, but it is perhaps the best open-source cart for enterprise needs.

Magento Commerce is extremely nice, but is not up to par for use in full-scale, large websites. Perhaps after it's gold release (1.0), it will be able to match up against the big boys.

How is Magento not up to par for full-scale, large websites? It's hands down got much better features over OSCommerce. Granted Magento is still young and maturing as an open source project, it's way better than OSCommerce for large websites. If anything, I'd recommend using OSC for a very small web store but not for a larger one.

You might want to look at the roadmap for all missing features:

Recently, one of my friend asked me what script to go with, I told him OScommerce. Few days later, he told me that OScommerce script wasn't quite good. I just recommended him the ZenCart and Magento script. Thanks guys.

i used osCommerce a lot for development at a firm I worked for... it was a real pain to skin or change from the default look. I'm not sure if it has changed recently, but it was ok once you got familiar with it

I have recently been exploring virtue mart for Joomla. Integrates with all the nifty features of Joomla, and gives shopping cart functionality.

I havent used ZenCart though
