Question Advice Needed Please

I have recently purchased webspace and a domain in order to group together my vaious mini-sites. At least one of these sub-sites will eventually have many stories, character profiles and stuff like that. I dont want to clutter my root directory and I want to avoid using URLs for my own pages (i prefer /images/menu.swf etc.) I have a flash menu bar that links directly to pages with the "/html/tutu.htm" method, and I want to put my html for the characters, in seperate folders. But this means putting the menu as either a url or make the links full URLs which i would prefer not to do as I wouldnt be able to just update the one file - i'd have to multiple upload (which is why i didnt do text links). I want a way (without using dumb html frames) to somehow call up data into a page.
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/web-design-discussion/25550-advice-needed-please.html

To be more exact, I want to keep the page with the menu on, then when a link off the root page is chosen for a certain profile, it brings up the profile fom a seperate folder in the table cell i am using to write my site into. I was thinking that there has to be a way to getting a page to appear in a table cell, possibly using a script or something, and I only know html.

I have noticed a lot of sites with "skins" (such as http://www.pinkpt.com and Neopets.com's "Neopian Times") and the contents of the tables remain the same even if the design is changed. And i wondered if these were done as seperate pages which are then 'called up' into the main table. Pink poogletoy in particular would need a lot of work in order to change the text links it has on the side of its pages, as it would take hours to add them to ecah one eery time a new feature was added.

Sorry if i am very unclear and BSing. Im not quite sure if its possible to do and certainly woukldnt know the proper terms t describe it if it does.

Hi Dan,

You could do this many ways depending on your skill level, ultimately you would do this with a server side language and a database like PHP & MySQL with css. That is pretty exhausting work if you are just getting to grips with all that.

With HTML you can implement server side includes (SSI) on certain parts of your pages, like header footer and navigation that are all controlled by one easy to edit html file.

Take a look at the code of http://www.worldwidefreelancer.com as I have just been implementing this style into the site, starting with the homepage and a few subpages, the navigation tables and the footer are dynamically loaded html files so when that file is called for changes the whole site is updated, all with SSI and HTML files.

This simple command:

Quote:
<!--#include virtual="ssi/top-navigation.htm" -->
is replaced with tables and content viewed in the code of the above page, you could make your pages loading different components for what you are talking about above, if you have any Q's just ask, hope this helps

I have copied the list of items from the "script languages" section of my hosts website for my plan:

Full CGI-BIN
Perl 5
Active Server Pages
Miva Scripting Language
Python
PHP4

I *think* I understand this but I will wait fo the script stuff too as it seems a little complex to take in properly right now. I'm busy today and don't have much time to go looking at it in too much depth. Thanks though, hopefully it will help
