Making images not repeat twice in Dreamweaver MX

I'm working on a website where I have a background image that looks like it is part of the title/menu graphic (i.e. http://www.irla.org). In Dreamweaver I went to Page Properties and set the background image that way. however my client has text that goes far down the page, and past the 3000px mark (or whatever the maximum is when creating in Photoshop--it is approximately 1-2px wide and the height is 3000+px), so the background image repeats again at the bottom. Is there a way to set the background image to only repeat horizontally and not vertically? Or is there a way to correct this in CSS? My only gripe with that is that there is a possibility that a lot of the visitors will be people with old computers and browsers, and the CSS positioning won't work like I want it to for them.

Ahhhh...a web designer's neverending battle.

Thanks! BTW for anybody else that needs to know--you can change the "y" to "x." That is actually what I needed to do... Am quite grateful for the response so I could finally figure this out. Love this forum--am constantly learning more and more useful info!!

Oh and I just saw your response on the old browsers. Maybe it won't be so bad after all. I'll stick with this for now, since it seems to work for me. Hopefully there aren't too many with old browsers.
