Cost of Designing Online Community

Hi,

I am interested in getting someone to design a website similar to www.answerology.com but in a foreign language.

Including everything it has, how much can you expect it to cost?

Hosting, marketing, and all things not paid to the web design company is not included.

What are some ways to reduce costs?

thanks

Well if you want a professional to design and code it you're looking in the range of $1000 for just the design and coding.
However to get an exact price you'd have to be more specific on exactly what you need coding wise.

The professional designers you find around here will probably charge on an hourly rate of their expected salary per year / total hours * 1.25 (25% increase for overheads and costs such as software licenses).

So working on that basis most designers would be charging you around $35 - $40 per hour, $315 in a 9 hour working day.
Then it all comes down to what type of designer you get as to how many days it will take him.

Personally if I started this task on monday I would set it out in the following way;

Monday - Design draft proposals for the website (4 hours) and submit them

Tuesday - Await feedback on draft proposals (Won't charge for this day)

Wednesday - Implement one of the ideas (Full 9 hour day) and I would probably get one of them up to par in one day

Thursday - Await feedback on the implemented idea (Won't charge for this day)

Thursday - Finishing touches to design and modifications made to users achknowledgement (Full 9 hour day) + Re-Submit

Friday - Upon acceptance code the design (Varying amount of time but I would probably use the full day to make sure I have every aspect working)

So thats a total of 31 hours and at a rate of $40 an hour you're looking at around $1,200.

I must stress though that different designers will charge different hourly rates and take different amount of times so this is in no way a set price to expect, you asked us to guess and I have made a "guesstimate".

If you want to reduce costs then the only way is to probably lower the bar on what you are expecting from your designer, or go with someone who will do it for $50 or so.
Sounds great? Usually it isn't. Reduced prices by a margin like that means reduced quality, as with anything in life. If you spend $50 on a computer you won't get very far, spend $1,200 and you're sorted for the next few years.
One thought out investment with a good designer will save you in the future and give you a website you can be proud of.

Hope I was helpful!

Regards,
Jonny.
