Starting up an on-line store.. help

I was wondering how I go about creating a website that allows for the on-line shopping cart. I have never created a website but I will either need to learn quickly or hire someone to do it for me.

Thanks for your anticipated help.

Well the easiest thing to do is get a host that supplies fantastico as that is basically an auto-installer of a lot of different scripts including 3 different types of shopping system, not sure how easy they are to customize - shouldn't be too bad though.

I recommend osCommerce. Its a free, open source, ecommerce system project. I've used it before, its very customizable, but you will need some knowledge of PHP and CSS. There's a great community to help you, and with lots of mods that you can install.

See oscommere.org

Use OsCommerce, it's great and free.

cheap alternatives to open source are LiteCommerce and turnkeywebtools.com. ($99 and $189 respectively, though litecommerce may require extra plugins that cost a little more)

LC and turnkey are completely customizable in every way - they're template-driven.

I'm a big fan of CubeCart, I find it a lot easier to customise than OS Commerce.
