Coming Up With That First Design

Hi,

Here's a question that is probably asked time and time again. Well I'm asking it once more :

How do most people choose a design for a site?

I'm a good web coder, but my web design lacks imagination most of the time. When I get a good design for a site, I can go away and make it work well and look great. But it's just getting that first design on paper.

I was just wondering what most people use/do to come up with that first design.

yes i totally understand your question. sometimes it hard for me to start to design. i will start with one idea and have it layed out in myhead... but then as i go, everything starts to change.
..suggestions?

im building a website for someone at the moment, i was totally stuck for ideas and i was trying to force the ideas out (never a good idea imo) then i opened photoshop up and used the gradient tool and was just making gradients on a page and then a idea popped into my head

i gues the moral of the story is dont try and force the ideas, they will come to you eventually

I'd play around a bit on your graphics program like he did. Try using colors you like and are easy on the eyes.

When Im stuck, what I do is I look around on the web, go for a walk, watch TV, or like Adam and Alpha said, fiddle around on Photoshop. I try to notice small things, like bugs or cracks in the pavement, and some how that helps me become creative. Always look around on the web to see what other people have on their site. I dont steal their ideas, but I do mess with them until they become my own. Eventually, something interesting will come!!!

Heh, i'd imagine expanding your mind using mind altering methods would help. But i had to quit that shat. Can someone say Alcohol?
