Before enlisting the services of a site designer...

...what and how much should one know about ones future web site? I mean, how much will the designer know and how much will they NEED TO KNOW from you about your future site? For instance, I know nothing about data bases or how to create them but I sense that my site will need one to run. Can the designer just go by how I'd like my site to run?

Also, can some designers work with just an idea from their client or do they need the accompanying text, logo, and images that will be incrporated into the site. How much must already be done before a designer will feel comfortable accepting a project?

That's a lot of questions but they're all basically redundant so there's no need to tackle them all.

thanks.

I'm working on a few websites with a friend of mine right now... he does the bulk though... so i can only tell you what i know...

One website, we were told what the company name is... and what type of website it'll be... and the types of things he wanted on it... Forum, Screenshot section with submit function, member's section, admin control's, etc... he designed the website, wrote the code for the forums, polls, screenshot section, admin section, etc.. etc... I designed the logo for the organization, i came up with a witty slogan... now we are basically waiting for them to send us the information they want displayed on the website...

Another website we are working on once school is over, because they don't want it until mid summer, we know its a travel agent website... and she wants pictures of destination, she already has a company name (because she's not new to travel, just the internet) and she said she'll send us the specifics of the website... we just design the visual aspects...

So really... the more information the better, but sometimes it beste to let the designer actually do his job... Though, i don't know many webdesigners who like writing the actual content of the website... so thats a must... logo's are nice to have, but arn't always nessesary... i guess its all personal preferance... Just ask them... you ARE paying them for it... so they arn't going to demand you provide certain stuff... Just as long as you know what the website is going to be used for... and what type of things you'd like on it...

anyone else?

Thanks, darkdevil. I guess since I have most of the text done for my site, it shouldn't be too much of a headache once I hand it over to a pro. The logo should be easy but I prefer if the designer come up with something themselves.

Yup, some designers like making logo's, some don't, some don't mind as long as you give them some idea of what you want... But you are paying them, so you shouldn't hear any *****ing on their behalf...

Very good questions!

I think darkdevil summed it up pretty good.

I think if you had a designer come up with content also, you could expect to pay quite a bit more.

Exactly, because its not really in the job discription of a webmaster/webdeveloper/webprogrammer to write content... that would be a freelance writer...
