I would have to go with phpBB - it has great support, tons of mods and the template system is easy to work with and highly customizable. If you want to see SMF in action you can sign up for a free forum at smfforfree.com. It'll give you a good idea of the capabilities of the software.

Many features have been disabled in the smfforfree version.

Deffo go with SMF. I use it on all my sites and all the sites I work with.

My first pick would certainly be vBulleting, then phpBB.
I have over 30 forums, and have tried most of the popular software available.

err not sure, maybe phpbb if your looking for all the extras but otherwise i would say smf. THe only thing i hate is that smf has those stupid boxes.

My personal favorite is MyBB: http://www.mybboard.com/
All the features of vB and IPB, but free.

phpBB is OK if you just want a basic forum, but it dosen't have many features.

Eh, if I was ever in a LIFE OR DEATH situation and I had to make the HORRIBLE choice of deciding between feature-lacking phpBB, or ugly-as-hell SMF, I'd probably choose SMF.

But of course that will never happen, I use MyBB as Masahiro pointed out.
MyBB rocks, seriously. I love it.

only thing is that phpbb does not have subforums out of the box and smf has those
who want to mod a forum just to get sub-forums. i dont and also admin interface of phpbb is not that good. last time i looked there was no way to register a username via the admin cp other than that it has good skins, and mods
